I would be happy if my smartphone was WiFi only. I already pay for internet in my house and I can find it around most places I would need it. I could live with the times where I had no internet. I buy my smartphone for apps, not for web browsing.

C’Mon Verizon, this would help the “great bandwidth shortage”, wouldn’t it? What do ya say? Quit forcing customers to dish out $30 extra for the privilege of owning a smart phone

I have to be honest, although I will be getting one of the great new 4G Verizon phones within a month, I am not going to be continuously streaming high def movies or using much of the “unlimited” bandwidth that I am grandfathered into. They’re going to be making money off me – but I do demand the unlimited plan. Psychological, I guess. Just give me a way to really use the browser and I’ll be ecstatic – 3G on the original Droid is not usable for even a simple search on Google.

That grandfathering has a TON of loopholes in it. I was grandfathered on the unlimited data first gotten on my Treo, but most recently, I wasn’t on a smart phone, my 1st gen Voyager was on some mid-tier that didn’t qualify it as a smart phone — so when I got the new 4s, they dropped my unlimited status.

It sucks that this only applies to smartphone plans. I have a 4g hotspot with them and it seems silly that I am going to pay the same amount of money and get half the data as other customers. Its the same data after all. I smell a class action…

I remember when unlimited texts were standard with all voice plans pre-2G data. Then people started calling less and that changed quick. Funny thing is, texts use zero bandwidth. It costs the carriers absolutely nothing as it’s delivered in the packets that essentially check in with the phone from the tower. Now data limits I can understand… wireless data is costly, and you don’t want a handful of people tethering their phone while at home to use LTE as a 2-for-1 broadband connection and saturate a particular tower’s bandwidth. Therefore I understand you have to place the limit somewhere. I still find 2GB low given the proliferation of streaming audio and video these days. 4GB is more realisitic, but I think 8GB would be low enough to cut off the excessive users out there while keeping your heavy smartphone data users covered. That said, Verizon knows they have the market beat right now with data coverage and they’re making hay while the sun shines just like they shamelessly did with text messaging.

I’ve been on Verizon for years, and have had a data plan for a long time (currently on $30 unlimited). My wife wants a feature phone – can’t believe they would charge an additional $20 for the minimal data it will be getting. If Verizon didn’t have such good coverage, I’d switch in a heartbeat.

I believe they are still grandfathering unlimited data so this doubling wouldn’t really apply to those customers. However, for the rest of V’s customers old and new not on an unlimited plan, it could be a good way to bump up the data plan and stay cost-neutral.

I think, like most here, we all agree they are just greedy and they are nickel and diming us to death. I do not mind paying 30 for unlimited, but if for some reason, i didn't have unlimited data, i would drop data all together and just get a pay as you go phone, VoIP is almost free so the only reason they get away with it, is because people put up with it, we should give them the same treatment that the banks are getting and you will see how they all change their tones about charging 20 for 300 megs, which is just ridiculous.

Use What is is so right! I worked as a field technician for Verizon and Sprint pcs, with CDMA they have almost 40 times the bandwidth of TDMA networks! Seriously let’s take a look at this just my phone plan for me and my wife is $232 dollars a month, this should be definitely counted towards debt to income ratios in mortgage and credit markets. If you really won’t to get technical it is a national security risk, therefore people shouldnt be ripped off they way that they are! And Verizon is most expensive out of all carriers.

they do grandfather the unlimited plans at 30 if you have it. but if you change your phone to a non-smartphone or change your data plan to the new 4gb plan, then they no longer can offer you the unlimited at the same price.

This shouldn’t be pitched as a positive. They have plenty of network to offer unlimited. 300GB data plan for $20/month? They should be ashamed to even offer such a ridiculous plan. If there was any sort of actual competition this would not happen. This is a great example of why AT&T + TMobile cannot ever be allowed.

We pay a monthly fee, and have paid such a fee for many years, for infrastructure development. Don’t buy the “oh my gosh we have a bandwidth crisis” line– bandwidth is cheaper and faster than ever, and getting more so every day. Charging more for less is monopolistic abuse and should be shunned.

I am due for an upgrade. I currently have an “unlimited” data plan. If they try to drop that to 2GB or even 4GB a month then I will buy a $10 flip phone and drop data entirely. Screw ‘em.

Don’t existing Verizon customers get grandfathered in with unlimited data plans? Would the signing up for the “double” plan break the grandfathering?
