Steam is one of the most used gaming networks in the world. The amount of people logged onto their servers and playing a game is more than 2 times the amount of Xbox Live and Playstation Network combined.
Steam is going somewhere and infact it probably is going more than Playstation and Xbox because of the fact that Steam doesn't require you to buy a new console or a new product to do upgrades.

Sure the prices on steam ARE currently very good, but I believe competition will make sure it stays that way. I would hate them to become the only digital retailer (and lets face it the retail "boxed" game is - sadly - dying a death). If they had no competition I suspect the offers may dry up. I would hate them to become like the Sony store - look at people with the PSP go, sony screw them over royally, games are always more expensive than their disc counterparts there.

MS live store is only marginally better, "full" games on there are way more expensive than the retail games.

Steam was awful when it 1st started - I set up my account when I got halflife 2 on launch and it took a good number of years to get where it is today. I suspect Origin once it finds its feet will be just as good as well.

I don't know how games could get much cheaper on Steam. I just picked up Deus Ex: Human Revolution for ten bucks and it got released in what, November? Plus all their ridiculous sale events every couple few months. I mean, if the prices go much lower they'll have to start paying us! Joking of course. Kinda.

Although if someone can find a way to push Steam to become a better service, I'm all for it. But I think it will have to be in the service and delivery sector as opposed to price as I believe that they have set the standard quite high.

Steam is a great service with lots of good offers. EA selfish for setting up Origin? Maybe but then in theory why shouldnt they set up their own service? Are Valve going to allow their products to go on Origin (serious question I have no idea). Sure I hate having multiple download clients, and I would love to have 1 to rule them all, but at the same time generally a monopoly is a bad thing so Origin may help us get cheaper prices down the line.

I must admit i wish it would come to Xbox. I must admit I am slightly jealous of Portal2 and if that is going to be the future of ps3/PC gamers I will be more so. I would love to have the eye candy of all games on my PC at the same time as gaming with my console owning mates.

It's free to join and there are a lot of good games for free too, plus tons of demos to try out.
Lots of free servers to choose from, for pretty much any game you like.
If you buy a game, it's always there in the cloud so you can re-download it if you need to.
