A USB connection for an data intensive I/O port makes a hell of a lot more sense than a Mini Displayport connector. It's hard enough trying to find a Display Port Connector, but an MDP? Nobody outside of Apple's notebooks use it. And I've never seen a monitor with the exception of Apple's heinously crappy Cinema Displays with one either.

Special AMD cards use them, but you have to use an MDP to DP adapter just to get it work with any decent monitor.

Sony was smart on this one.

Both have their advantages and disadvantages. I wonder if Sony's use via USB makes it backwards compatible with older USB devices. That seems to be the idea, but it's not entirely clear in the post. Personally I tend to like Apple's single port implementation that way you only need to have one type of cable. I was very happy to hear when the EU regulated that all charges would be micro USB. Finally an end to the proprietary ac adapters. A single cable/connector simplifies a great deal of necessary connectivity.
