Updated Sonic the Hedgehog 2 lands on Android and iOS

Sega has announced that one of its most beloved classic games from the earlier days of gaming is making a comeback. Sonic the Hedgehog 2 has landed on Android and iOS devices for the first time. This isn't a major overhaul of the classic game graphically, but a porting of a classic to the mobile platforms. The game has the slightly pixilated graphics that we remember from the gaming days gone by.

This marks the first time that the game is available on Google Play. For gamers that downloaded the game on the iOS platform for the iPhone or iPad, the new version is offered as a free update. Those that don't have the game can purchase the new version from the App Store.

Sega says that the re-mastered mobile game will allow players to rush through some of the most iconic Sonic zones like Emerald Hill, Chemical Plant, and Casino Night. The game has upgraded visuals and promises a smooth frame rate.

The game can be played as one of three characters including Sonic, Tails, or Knuckles. A new Boss Attack mode where players can try to beat all of the bosses in the game in a single run has been added. The updated game also gets a new zone not available in the original Sega Genesis game called Hidden Palace Zone. Sonic the Hedgehog 2 is available for $2.99.
