Upcoming Sword Coast Legend D&D lets you play Dungeon Master

If you're any type of gamer, especially on PC, you've probably had your fill of memorable RPGs that inspire your imagination with their immersive stories and memorable characters. But what if you're so inspired you wanted actually wanted to control how the story goes. Then you, my friend, have a calling to be a Dungeon Master. Lucky for you, an upcoming Dungeons & Dragons game called Sword Coast Legend will let you do exactly that, playing the mastermind behind the adventure of your own design for four of your friends to enjoy.

Although it existed long before Dungeons & Dragons, it was D&D that made the term "dungeon master" a household name. Sadly, that unique collaborative/competitive experience didn't really transition well from pen & paper D&D to computer games and very few of the latter have been able to capture that essence of the game. That is exactly what n-Space and Digital Extremes are trying to bring to the table. The PC table, that is.

Details are still a bit slim, but Sword Coast Legend will feature a DM Mode that tries to emulate the tabletop D&D to PC in a way never before seen, or so they say. Dungeon Masters, or DM's, will be given the tools needed to create engaging missions and content, including adjusting encounters with NPCs and enemies, place and control monsters, set traps, rewards, and punishments for players, and even campaign tools for DM's to create even larger scenarios. All of these without needing any programming knowledge.

To be fair, Sword Coast Legends would not be the first to make this attempt. Back in the old BioWare days, the first NeverWinter Nights also had its DM mode. But times have changed and so have technologies. It will be interesting to see how far we've come and what can be done using today's tools. Technical details of this aspect of the game are also few, but the developers have left enough for us to imagine and chew on until the game arrives.

For those who could care less about DM'ing, as it is called, Sword Coasts Legends still has something to offer. It does have a single-player mode where recruitable characters take the place of real-world party mates. There isn't much to go on in terms of the story aside from the fact that it takes place in The Forgotten Realm's Faerun, one of the most used campaign settings in D&D. We will have to wait for more tidbits to be revealed until the game launches for the PC later this year. Preorders are already open, with prices ranging from $34.99 for a digital copy and $239.99 for a Limited Edition pack.
