Unreal Engine 4 running on Firefox browser shown on video

Unreal Engine 4 is a game engine that has been around since 2012 and makes video games look really good. This week, Epic Games and Mozilla are showing off Unreal Engine 4 running on the Firefox web browser. The video below shows the game engine running its Soul and Swing Ninja demos inside the web browser.

The coolest thing about the video is that it appears the demos are running at near native speeds. With the game engine now able to run in Firefox, the door is open for some very cool browser-based video games. The video shows the Unreal Engine 4 demos running in the browser with no plug-ins required.

This game engine is designed to power next generation games and is meant to be able to scale from the PC and console systems to mobile devices and the web. The Unreal Engine code that developers use will target asm.js and the web.

Unreal Engine 3 was ported to the web and used asm.js. Optimizations for asm.js over the last year have improved the performance of web applications using it from 40% of native to 67% of native. That means better performance in the browser and games that look more like PC and console titles. Unreal Engine 4 on Firefox will be shown off at GDC this year.
