Loading ...Even more bad news for Sony (these poor guys simply can’t catch a break, can they?), as Universal Studios has announced that they will no longer be supporting Sony’s Blu-ray DVD format, opting instead for the competing HD-DVD technology. Between the PS3 Europe delay announcement, the Japanese/US PS3 quantity slash, and now Universal’s public slamming of their next-generation DVD format has turned this into one bad week for Sony.
In his scathing CEDIA 2006 critique, Universal President of Home Entertainment Craig Komblau stated:
Look at the blogs, look at the reviews by the early adopters and even look at the mainstream media – HD DVD has maintained its first-to-market advantage and delivered on the promises of providing the best high definition image and sound quality at the best value for consumers today. Take today’s announcement of new players from Toshiba, new PC hardware from Niveus and new titles like ‘The Fast and the Furious: Tokyo Drift,’ and add the hardware and movies that are coming this Fall and you can see why HD DVD is poised for a strong holiday.
So with one less Blu-ray supporter, angry gamers all over the world, and exploding laptop batteries, Sony really needs to catch a vacation from all this negative publicity. Maybe a killer PS3 launch, guys?

Hey jakey, thats what you and some idiots thought about. Sony is a very profitable company and one of the strongest company in Earth. They have an array of products desired by the majority. Though Apple is leading them in the mp3 player business, they are still raking a lot of money from consumers. And in case you didn’t know, this year alone, their movie business is doing very, very well with strings of consecutive top charts opening. You do the research bud!

Betamax v VHS - VHS won, but i still believe Betamax was better.
BD v HD-DVD - Personally I think BD is better due to the file storage capacities (and the fact I own a PS3, 360 owners have to pay £100/$200 to add HD-DVD on to it)
The only thing that worries me about the “War” between the two is the format names.
Ask the average joe in the street what HD-DVD stands for and they will probably hit the nail on the head with “High Definition DVD, ‘cos my tele says HD on it and the salesman told me it meant High Definition”!!!!!!
So what does BD stand for to the average “I haven’t got a clue” person on the street?????? - unfortunately…….. Nothing
Thankfully I am in a fairly good position with owning a PS3, if BD dies a death I can buy a HD-DVD player and still be able to watch both formats. However the people that have spent a fortune on the losing side will only have an expensive monitor stand.
