Unity acquires Applifer to add instant replays for games

If you are a gamer and like to have games that you can play on your portable and mobile devices, you may be familiar with a company called Unity. Unity is a firm that has been around for a while and has a game development engine that allows the developer to build a game one time and then run that game natively on multiple platforms.

The engine supports iOS, Android, Windows, Mac, Linux, Windows Phone, and BlackBerry. Unity has announced that it has acquired another firm called Applifier to bring new functionality to its game engine.

Applifer has tech that allows the gamer to record and share replays of their games instantly. The idea is that gamers could share their gaming prowess or cool parts of a game with other people. The goal of the purchase is to make Applifier's ability to replay and share game video as simple as clicking a checkbox.

The idea is to let the chip inside a smartphone that encodes video for the camera handle the game replay video encoding while the game is being played. By taking advantage of that chip usually dedicated to working with the camera when the camera isn't in use, the encoding of the recorded video shouldn't affect the performance of the game or device. Terms of the deal haven't been disclosed at this time.
