I don’t think it’ll be long before the FedEx guy and I are on a first name basis. Today he brought me two more packages filled with goodies. The first of the two contains a pair of sweet speakers from M-Audio.

M-Audio Studiophile AV 40

The Studiophile AV 40 speakers aren’t just your average desktop speakers. These are actually built using the same innards as professional studio monitors, so you can bet they are going to sound awesome.

I’ve never been much of an audiophile, though growing up in a family of musicians, so I have a pretty decent ear for audio equipment. Expect a full review sometime in the near future.

Am eagerly awaiting your review, thanks. Particularly if these are good/powerful enough to be an audio solution for an HTPC in a small living room, driven by a PC sound card, for a not-that-discriminating group of listeners sitting maybe 10′ away & watching TV/DVDs & occasionally listening to music at low volume?

I’m not a big audio expert but am a musician who has recorded and has paid attention to sound. I just got a pair of AV40s and they are blowing me away with the quality. I think they will fill your needs. They are 20w per channel, are hooked to my PC with just the on-motherboard sound, and for the first time I can put on CD or mp3 music and hear it clearly in the other room.

With the speaker volume at half way, the PC volume is on the 2nd notch for normal PC listening, such as something on youTube. Turn the speaker and the PC volumn all the way up and it’s ear-damaging, and no distortion (at least not anything obvious like my old plastic 10W PC speakers).

As for the sound quality, I’m hearing subtle things in my favorite tunes that I’ve never heard before. Incredible clarity. Also makes a huge difference watching DVDs. Last night I watched some favorite scenes in Harry Potter 3 and heard quiet background sounds and other effects I wasn’t hearing before.

    I hope this helps.

    Regards,
    Clayton
