Ubiquitous iRemoTap Powerstrip Can Be Controlled Via The Cloud

Everything's heading to the cloud these days, and powerstrips are no exception. The Ubiquitous iRemoTap is a powerstrip that boasts a built-in wireless LAN that connects to the internet so that you can remotely turn on and off anything attached to it via your mobile device or desktop web browser.

The motivation behind the concept and prototype is to help people save energy. Should you leave home and forget to turn off a light or some other device attached to the powerstrip, you can do so right from your phone. The powerstrip can also be customized to allow for certain usage limits. Once those limits are reached, you can be notified by email or by tweet.

The browser and mobile app from which you control the powerstrip also lets you know the power status of what's connected. For instance, if you can't remember whether or not you've turned off a light in your house, you can easily check the online system for the on/off status.

Currently, the iRemoTap is still just in the research and development phase. But, Ubiquitous hopes to eventually be able to bring the device to market at a price point below 10,000 Yen or $122. What do you think about the concept?
