Turn off a piece of your display to save battery

It's not a brand new concept, but there certainly aren't very many people who've taken advantage of the ability: turning off pixels on your Android smartphone. Suppose you've got a massively dense display, full of thousands of pixels, and you're just about to run out of battery. Wouldn't it be great if you could turn off a piece of your screen and run a whole lot longer?

There's an app by the name of Pixel Battery Saver that just might be the ticket you're looking for. Once activated, this app goes in and de-activates a percentage of the pixels on your Android device's display.

You can go quite basic – "Lowest" to "Highest" or off. There aren't a whole lot of options, but it does presuppose that you'd like to use the service at all times with a toggle in your pulldown menu.

The app is free. There's a paid version as well that works around an app install issue you'll have if you plan on installing apps while its running, but you can also just turn it off and back on again around apps you download. Easy peasy.

Thus far we've gotten some interesting results. With an HTC One M8, for example, battery drain lessened somewhat – perhaps single-digit percentages over an extended period.

Whether or not it's worth sacrificing your beautiful screen image for added uptime is up to you. The app is up on the Google Play app store right this minute.

BONUS: Play a game like Auralux and take some screenshots then zoom well in. Some beautiful images result.
