Tubi TV scores load of movies in Paramount deal

Cord cutters have another relatively little-known entertainment option with Tubi TV ("tubitv"), a service that has recently expanded by striking a deal with Paramount Pictures. Under the deal, Tubi has scored 50 of the company's older movies that are being provided for streaming for free, included among them being Top Gun. Tubi TV works in a way similar to Crackle, in that content is free but supported by advertisements that pepper the content. Tubi TV launched last year, and boasts a large library of content.

The new rights scored from Paramount Pictures was announced on Thursday, and adds to the service's already 20,000+ library, which includes both television shows and movies. As you might expect, you're not going to find the same level of better-known movies and other content on Tubi as you would on, for example, Netflix.

This deal is another step toward changing that. And, according to Tubi, it trumps Crackle when it comes to how much content it has available to stream. The big difference, though not terribly significant, is that you must register in order to access Tubi's content, whereas that's not necessary on Crackle.

Up to six minutes worth of commercials are shown for every half an hour or so of content, which turns away those who would rather pay for an uninterrupted show. What Tubi TV has had to shell out in exchange for the streaming rights isn't known and likely will not be revealed. For those who are wondering, Tubi TV has an app available for Roku and many other popular streaming devices.
