Everywhere you turn these days there seems to be a smartphone waiting to ambush you, leaping out from the shadows and shaking its QWERTY keyboard, cajoling you with promises of push-email and good times.  Choice is a Good Thing, of course, but the downside is that it can get confusing trying to decide which is worth giving up a year or maybe two of your contract-life for.  As far as I can tell, this new i-mate JAQ3 is aimed at potential Treo 680 buyers; like the Palm phone, it lacks 3G connectivity, but unlike it offers Windows Mobile.

The JAQ3 is more along the line of Samsung BlackJack and HTC Excalibur. The Treo 680 is a different beast being that it has a touchscreen. The operating system is the other obvious difference - Palm runs Palm OS while the JAQ3 runs Windows Mobile without a touch screen. i-mate and Palm just doesn’t get it. Why bother releasing a device without 3G? If you’re going to leave out 3G, at least throw in Wi-Fi. Lack of high speed of anything is getting old.

The JaQ3 does have a touch screen, and runs full Windows Mobile 5 PocketPC. It lacks 3G, but at least it has WIFI, unlike the Treo 680.

Ahh - I stand corrected. Thanks for the update! I can live without 3G as long as its got WiFi and a healthy battery.
