Total Wii sales surpass the GameCube in just over a year

To say that sales of the Wii have been good would be an understatement. It’s been a little over a year since the console was launched, and still it is difficult to even find one on store shelves. Sure, part of that is due to a limited supply, which also makes one wonder what sales would be like if there was no shortage. Knowing this, it’s no surprise that sales have finally passed those of its predecessor, the GameCube.

While this may seem like a mildly exciting milestone, it is actually big news for Nintendo. What you may not know is that Nintendo has never released a console that has outsold any of its predecessors (handhelds excluded). A quick rundown of numbers will show that the NES sold 61 million, SNES moved 49 million, N64 sales were at 33 million and the GameCube is just under 22 million.

Really, that’s not too bad for a console to outsell a 6-year-old console after only being out a little over a year. Analysts suspect that by the end of the year Wii sales could potentially surpass those of the SNES. It’ll probably be some time (if ever) before the NES sales record is broken.
