Since deciding to not go the Blu-ray route, Toshiba has been struggling to come up with ways to grab a piece of the market. Rather than selling a standard DVD player, or go for an HD upgrade, Toshiba is opting to use their own technology with the XD-E500 DVD Player.

This latest Toshiba offering is no standard DVD player. Rather, it sports the company’s eXtended Detail Enhancement or XDE tech that improves resolution significantly. Or so they say. It seems initial response has been tentative at best, with “subtle but noticeable sharpening of the image” the only real compliment in sight.

Upconverting technology can’t compare with HD-DVD or Blu-ray, but it can offer an “in-between” alternative to a standard DVD player. Even so, the $150 price tag is a bit hefty for only a slight improvement.
