So first there was a rumor floating around about a new Xbox 360 SKU that would include an internal HD DVD player. Sometime afterwards Toshiba stepped up and denied the rumor, smashing any hopes that we would be able to minimize the number of cables in our home theater setup. Now Toshiba is back saying that they were misquoted.

Here’s what Toshiba was quoted as saying by Stuff: “It’s got nothing to do with us. But we know Microsoft doesn’t want to include the HD DVD drive so as not to limit the user’s experience.” However, Toshiba says that it should have read “Toshiba has no comment to make on this matter. The Xbox 360 is not a Toshiba product.”
That’s a pretty big misquote. Rather than putting the matter to rest, Toshiba has just added fuel to the fire. So was their first quote just a mistake, or did they really say something they shouldn’t have? I suppose we’ll know one of these days.

I think they need this and a dedicated internet browser in at least one of their SKUs, with a bigger HD and the new marketplace offerings it would really be a true media center.

Wow, could MS be seeing that a fully featured 1080p game is hard to fit on a bvd? But all the 360 fan boys have been telling me that that the blu-ray in the PS3 was a stupid mistake for Sony ;) Idiots. All you 360 people will see sony made the right choice to include the blu-ray before this is all said and done 5 years from now.

I have a feeling Toshiba will in fact make this, but however NOT mark this as a Microsoft product. However, I also think that if this ever does come to light, it will be for the Japanese/Asian market only. Think about it, it makes perfect sense: Xbox 360 is falling way behind in those markets, partly due to the fact that most Asians (especially Japanese) are very patriotic when it comes to buying anything, especially cars and electronics. So, instead of trying to push an Xbox 360 in those markets, they can push a Toshiba HD DVD player that just happens to also play Xbox 360 games. It would be a good marketing strategy for those territories they are failing in. However, like I said, I doubt anything like this would come to North America, or Europe even. We’ll see.
