Toshiba IKS-WB9518 is maker's first 4K security camera

Security cameras, more often than not, have less-than-ideal image quality, something due in part to storage demands (storing endless hours of high-resolution footage requires ample storage space, after all). Storage isn't a concern in some cases, though, and for those situations there's the new Toshiba IKS-WB9518, the maker's first Ultra HD 4k resolution security camera.

The Toshiba IKS-WB9518 has a 3840 x 2160 UHD resolution and records video at 25 frames-per-second. Toshiba promises its new camera offers a "high-level of detail" suitable for companies and other situations where high-quality security footage is required. As well, the camera is equipped with a wide-angle lens able to cover large regions, reducing how many standard HD cameras someone would need to cover an area.

Of course, even those with large storage capacities still need to be mindful of storage needs. As such, Toshiba has used the H.264 video compression technology to minimize image size and bandwidth needs while maintaining the image quality. Features include streaming a FHD video feed while recording UHD footage, as well as a microSD card slot supporting up to 64GB for local storage.

Toshiba uses a variety of filters and enhancements to optimize footage recorded in different lighting conditions — at night, the camera can record in night vision in conditions down to 0.005 lux, and during the day, the camera filters infrared to enhance colors.
