Toshiba Halts OLED Production, Focuses on LCD Instead

For the most part, Samsung has a pretty big stake in the OLED manufacturing market. Other companies, like HTC for example, have depended upon them to manufacture displays for their high-end smartphones, like the Droid Incredible for Verizon. But there are other manufacturers out there that take pride in OLED distribution, like Toshiba. However, that's all about to change, as the company believes that there is still more of a focus on LCD displays, and have opted to stop production of OLED, and focus on LCD.

Sources speaking with Japan's Nikkei BP claim that Toshiba has made the decision to stop production of OLED, in favor of LCD, because the demand for the latter is still out-pacing demand for the former. What helped in the decision, however, was Toshiba's poor earnings, which have made it difficult for them to sustain the production of the organic displays. As for those working on the manufacturing of OLED displays, they'll be transplanted to the LCD panel division, so it doesn't look like there's going to be any huge waves of job loss.

The report does suggest, though, that Toshiba won't drop the production of OLED panels entirely, but that it will focus primarily on LCD. The original plans saw that Toshiba would produce 1.5 million OLED panels per year for smartphones. What that number is now, however, remains to be seen.
