There’s definitely still no clear victor in the battle for the high-def disk formats, but HD-DVD has made an advancement into an area that Blu-ray has yet to touch. Your car.

HD DVD player for your car

Toshiba has been working with Alpine Electronics to deliver an in-dash HD-DVD player for your car. Aside from wondering who actually needs a high-def picture while driving, I’m wondering how many people are actually going to cough up the cash for a tiny screen capable of viewing HD. I’m thinking the overall investment would outweigh the gain.

This is still only a development, but Toshiba is planning on releasing these units sometime in 2008. Somehow I don’t think the car market is going to be the deciding factor in the format wars.

I would like to comment on Mr Barr statement he made above about “who actually needs high def picture while driving”. Well sir the answer to that is someone who has children or passengers in the back seat. The posibilities have changed with headrest monitors.
