tivo mobileTiVo have launched a mobile site that allows subscribers to program their DVR from any internet-capable cellphone.  The TiVo Mobile interface has been formatted for the compact screen sizes available on mobile devices, but still manages to squeeze in listings browsing, searches and record settings, together with the company’s own “If you like this…” tool to discover new shows based on your viewing habits.

It’s also possible to search for programs by actor, title, director, and keyword, with additional functions including Daily Recommendations and Most Popular.  Access to the site is open to all, even those without compatible TiVo DVRs, with the company seemingly pushing it as a general listings guide as well.

You can access the TiVo Mobile site at http://m.tivo.com/, to program Series 2 or Series 3 boxes, with no extra fees or subscriptions.  The site is currently in beta and will apparently be available on a wide scale “in a few weeks”.

This works OK if you know what you want to record, however, there is no listing grid — just the ability to search for and schedule from the search results.

If you want to view a TV listings grid and schedule from that, you’ll have to consider other options. For me, I found the best solution for Windows Mobile is a combination of Skyfire and Yahoo TV listings.

Yahoo lets you add your Tivo service to your Yahoo account, after which you’re able to schedule Tivo stuff from the Yahoo TV listings. The listings won’t display in Pocket IE or Opera Mobile, however, they will in Skyfire.

Alternately, you can also sign into and access the Tivo channel guide — it’s just a bit of a pain to navigate — and overall much slower (much as it is on the PC) especially when you’re switching the next time-block when viewing the grid.

Whether on the PC or your WM device, the Yahoo TV listings are much easier to work with.

If you know what you want to record, the new mobile Tivo site is the best option; if you want to look at a channel guide though, it doesn’t have it :(
