That is just nonsense. Cable TV in no way needs the majors to survive. Hell, the majors don't even need their main channels to survive. I think you'll see soon enough that companies like Dish, or like Cox, ones only interested in rebroadcast, will begin to push back at the majors. Just like they are here with Auto Hop.

Really, this all boils down to what you consider Cable TV. I consider it the service, not who happens to be on at some time. We're in for some big changes, their oligopoly is about to crack, and not a moment too soon. And before long, we'll have pick your own cable, so these majors will lose most of their revenue stream there too, all in good time. Personally, I can't wait. They're a bloated industry that needs to be cut down to size.

Hahaha, this cracks me up. What an unbiased party you all wrote about here. Time Warner? Come on... owner of CNN, TNT, TBS. Cartoon Network, and lots of other trash. I feel sorry for you people that have to buy cable services from people who have a vested interest in the advertising revenue stream. Thank god we have a service like Cox Communications here where I live, so we don't have to put up with this disingenuous trash.

TV ads are so overvalued. It's a bubble of obsolescence. No one watches them, and it's hardly better during sports, everyone with a DVR just pauses and does something else so they can watch it with lag ad-free (or virtually ad-free).

The cable companies need to offer more value for their ridiculous rates. Pretty soon regulators will make them offer ESPN3 a la carte (since they already serve it on a per-subscriber basis) and then what will they do to prop up their pricing?

This is just going to end with them pushing more commercials in during the actual show instead of during commercial breaks. I have seen a lot more of this lately and it is pissing me off. It is the equivalent of an internet pop up during a show I am trying to watch, except it generally takes up a good 1/3 of the screen. Or in the case of comedy central, lately they have been advertising the new Tosh.0 by having "Tosh 5.29" fade in covering the whole screen and fading back out in about 2 seconds DURING tv shows. WTF!? Happens about once every five minutes, only during shows. Something tells me they are just "testing" this to see how we react and will push far more in the future.

But everybody records and fast forwards through the ads. If they were a reasonable length and not every 4 minutes maybe we would give them some more attention, but because they are too frequent and all too often humorless, dull cr*p they are ignored by the vast majority. Its time the providers realized that better programming, including adverts, will equal more viewers.

He has to, without network support the cable industry has a rough way to go. The last thing he needs is his customers AND the networks hating him. Cable pricing is a fine balance of extreme overhead, local taxes/concessions and contract negotiations.
