It’s the price thing as well. You cannot charge SO much more than everybody else then deliver an imperfect product. If you’re paying THAT much for a phone, you have to really believe that Apple are doing everything they can to give you the most premium, high quality mobile experience possible.

They’re not, of course, this shows how they are willing to make things worse for their customers in the name of spiting another company.

A display of power? Are you mental? Maybe it would be a display of power if they’d released it for download as a beta alongside google maps and said ‘OK, it’s not great, but we’re just testing it’, but to REPLACE something that works with something that doesn’t? Google maps in the browser is NOT a replacement for the maps app. It doesn’t work as well.

That’s not a display of power it’s a display of f**cking over their own customers so they can spite a company that they fear is catching/has caught/has surpassed them.

Only an apple fanboy can say these kinds of silly things. A company that took an existing maps application and replaced it with a shitty one shows how little it thinks of its users and how much it thinks of its profits.

Apple fans are like the abused…they don’t know any better and keep going back to their abuser…otherwise who would put up with them changing a connector and charging 29 bucks for it…that alone probably gives them over 28 bucks profit on each…so if they sell 10 million Iphones they will make 280 Million dollars on that alone.

I think actually Tim Cook knows his customers so well he can treat them like shit knowing they will come back asking for more.

Really apple is good at inter-operating with competitors? Can OSX read and write to NTFS drives or just read them? Were or weren’t IOS developers forbidden from writing their own turn by turn driving directions for years? Did or didn’t Mozilla decide not to write a web browser for IOS, because they knew that at the last second Apple could at their SOLE discretion deny them the right to appear in the IOS market simply because an IOS FireFox represented competition? Why would having the best browser on their phone be competition when it would actually make their customers happy? Well if customers realized they liked FireFox better, they might also realize that the same mobile FireFox is available for Android as well. Which would of course bring in to question, gasp, do I really need an IOS phone to be productive and have an attractive user friendly interface? Of course not.

Bring their own solution because Google would not license is makes perfect sense; booting Google maps off your OS when Maps was no where near ready, not even beta like quality, is a different matter. It seems like it was rushed out because they knew they were announcing iphone5. I find it hard to believe they did not know that it was not functioning properly all this time. It’s as if they did not actually go out and use it in the real world…

I haven’t seen a spin this bad since Apple convinced the world it’s about PPI and not size. That was marketing genius. Turned it into an oversimplified single number race (like MP and MHz) that consumers with no knowledge could say one display is better than the other. And since Apple had a small display, they had a huge advantage.

This thing is going to continue to bite Apple. I for one will not own a product priced at a premium price point when we have an issue with Maps. Navigation is a feature that I use. Have an iPad and one of my issues is that Apple maps occupies premium real estate and cannot be deleted like the junk it is.

That clip feels like watching a moon landing as envisaged in a bout 1932. Things really changed when the reality arrived. The Technology world has changed a lot since the early 80s, so have people’s expectations, Tim’s response the the map problems reflect that.

This is speculation, and I’d welcome feedback by legally trained commenters…

The apology accomplishes two things for Apple. First, it is an admission that Apple Maps is not as advertised. Second, it points out that there are cheap or free alternatives available.

I think the first part is an attempt to limit the size of the (inevitable) class action suit(s). By this public admission, Apple can limit the size of the class to those individuals who purchased or upgraded based on their claims prior to the admission. The second part merely acts to limit the size of any judgement.

The absence of any tangible attempt to rectify the problem beyond “…we are doing everything we can to make Maps better…” is pretty weak.

A display of power? I don’t think so. It’s basically an appeal to iOS users to not overreact just because it’s only one app that’s not up to snuff. Yes, the alternatives mentioned are from competitors but he really did not have a choice but to make clear to their customers about their options. One option not mentioned though was to switch completely to a different platform.

Not sure they had a reasonable alternative. I didn’t expect the news sites (for the most part) to all go against Apple. I also don’t think the bad news goes towards “any news is good news.” Everyone around me is avoiding discussing the problems, and are upgrading, so Apple should recover just fine. Stocks have dropped, but not by too much.

That is what the news says, but Apple and Google have had many discussions, and we just didn’t get those. What I feel I know comfortably is that Apple licensed the Google API, and Google did not provide the resources for voice turn-by-turn. They are going to come out with an App that will provide all those things, just not with Apple licensing the API. I don’t think Google doesn’t want their voice turn-by-turn on IOS, but maybe they want more control that Apple wasn’t humoring in the talks. Could have just been Google wanted to “track” people, and maybe even needed to, and that fell through. Who knows?

Supposedly, apple could have gotten turn-by-turn navigation on ios from google, but they weren’t willing to give google what it wanted. Hence the home-brew solution.

Exactly. Seems a bit like bait and switch to me. I don’t know if it was planned to go exactly like this or not, but Apple Maps does have problems, and that is not what they showed to the public. Maybe they really though it was flawless, and they were just mistaken. What they showed was beautiful and interesting, and what you got was a phone that can’t find you. I hope they can fix it quickly. I assume some people bought the phone thinking they would have an integrated gps solution, and telling them opps please use these other options while we fix it leaves a bad taste. Is there any other smart phone that doesn’t have integrated navigation? Now IPhone is the only one missing a key feature most of us use now, but at least allows a workaround. Not good. Also not the end of the world, but not good. Don’t know if we should still use the phrase “It just works.”

better” — If you read other news about this apparently Google Maps only supports turn-by-turn instructions on their own Android OS devices not on the iPhone. Apple wants to have turn-by-turn instructions so they were forced to make their own product.

I guess that is one way to look at it. Another is “Wait, don’t jump to another ecosystem (Android or Windows Phone) just because Apple Maps is lacking. There are other options you can use until we straighten this mess out.” The Apple ecosystem is what is important to the bottom line, not (at this point) Maps.
