Well, I don't know about other people, but for me the uni-body design of the iPad (and the ultra-mobility that comes with it) is probably in the top tree (if not The Top) reasons to buy it in the first place. That being said, Tim Cook's position seems absolutely understandable, from my viewpoint, that is.
I really don't need something that I have to open, while writing an email on the street.

So...let someone else build the hybrid devices and we'll see how they do.
I prefer tools to work perfectly within their design... good enough is not good enough.

Why are so many crying foul here. Anyone can produce an integrated product of any kind. Why is everyone looking to apple to produce it? Much of the problem is the software and usability. I think apples are still marginally better. Especially in the iPhone where it is just easier to do everyday things. I think when they others catch up they won't care where the best most suitable product comes from. And they will come. I myself love the idea of a Note sized Galaxy Siii. If I were a woman who always carried a bag that is what I would be using. I would say that if I had a tablet that size I would only have a data plan and communicate with people through one of the many media using data only.

I'm not sure Tim Cook knows that hybrid devices are the future. I'm not even sure they are the future computing devices. But I agree that hybrid devices sound appealing to me. That said, Apple could very well tailor their devices so that each excel in doing a few tasks extremely well, and hence improve customers experiences. For example, Ipads are for content consumming (web browsing, watching movies, reading, etc) while Macbooks/desktop are for content creation.... If each of these Apple products bring the best experience to the users, people would still prefer to use them instead of hybrids that offer a little more capabilities but with less polish user experiences.
That said, even though I'm currently own a Galaxy tab and the new Ipad, but when Windows 8 hybrid tablets come out I will definately give them a try.

Everyone is sort of right/wrong. I believe convergence will happen but not exclusively in hardware. I see a convergence in the content we keep on our devices and what we can do on/with them. No more fragmentation. In the future I see us using dumb screens at home and on the go to view our portable digital lives. We will have access to all of our information, data, media everywhere we go. All we will need to do is point or gesture to move our info from a portable device to a larger screen for optimal viewing. Computing power will be irrelevant as it will all be cloud based.

Tim Cook and apple are greedy disgusting corporate oligarchs. We basically need a macbook air 11 with cell phone capability. Apple, the greedy scum, they never put phone capability in iPads or airs because they know, despite all of us being nearly broke and living month to month due to radical increases in the price of food, gas, and rent, despite this, apple greedily fights consolidations of all these devices because they stink. We don't need an air, an iPad and an iPhone, we need something between an iPad and an air with phone capability. Im writing this on a MBP, so I'm not anti apple troll, but between this garbage and the fact mac os x 10.8 will try and punish apps not from the appstore and try to shove the software rental model down our throats makes me tired. Its sad to see the richest and largest company, apple, be so greedy. and the radical growth here is driving up house prices, their success destroys the middle class. its have and have nots, and it seems apple wants to make products for the one-percenter types despite the majority of the market being hardworking honest regular joes like me. 2012, stinks to be middle class. He is trying to be like Steve Jobs, he fails. Making idiot statements.

He put it a bit bluntly, but mostly i agree. I remember a few years back when we could buy these 17" super heavy all in one laptops that would replace desktop, game console and laptop. In the end you nded up with something that wasn't very good in all disciplines. I fear the same might happen to the tablet that wants to be desktop by docking and phone by bluetooth all at the same time.

Let's face it, hardware is getting cheaper and cheaper, so having different devices for different situations in life doesn't cost too much. For jogging i take my phone, for working my power-notebook and for accessing facebook on the couch a tablet.

However, convergence in software and data i see as a big plus. Once all my devices talk to each other, feel the same and have all data ready between each other instantly, that is something that i would buy into! Convergence in experience and my stuff, that's what will matter in the future in my opinion.

Tim Cook (Apple) KNOWS that the future are these "hybrid" devices. They don't want that to happen, because they PUSH this world where you have an iPad, iPhone, MacBook (Air) and iMac. Your iMac is your home (base computer). Your MacBook (Air) is that device you take too and from work, school. The iPhone is the device you have on you 24/7. The iPad is the device where you "relax" with and such.

These "hybrid" devices. Well instead of having to buy 4, you may only need to buy 2. They can laugh all the way to the bank if they sell you more devices than you really need.

Around me. A lot are looking at these "hybrid" windows slates (especially intel powered). Because they can trash their iPad AND computer (desktop or laptop). A larger phone is far easier to carry around than a tablet and perfect if you want to read, surf the web, etc. So having these two devices would be simpler, save them $$$ and they would be more satisfied.

But of Course Apple dosen't want that to happen because that could cut how much they make in half.
