Personally I would give up gaming like a bad habit if I had to buy new games. I know the end result of something like this registration would be that nearly every 720 would be jailbroken as soon as it got home.

Why would Microsoft care if people who buy used games aren’t buying their console? Also, what console game cost more than $60?
I agree the prices of games should be lower and there should be more variety.

This will only irritate buyers of used games. Only game stores and players make money off used games. It cost more to make a console than they sell for so they don’t care if you don’t buy the console. Microsoft won’t care if all the people who buy used games avoid this console.

Well my grandson was playing modern warfare 2 on his Xbox just fine with a new yr subscription we had just purchased, he was grounded for 3 weeks and when he got back on it was banned, so they banned him while he was grounded, yr subscription gone up in smoke, they say they do this because of pirating games, hmmm we buy him everyone he wants, we bought two of the new boxes this Christmas, this weekend we r putting all three on eBay, we just went out and bought ps3, we have put so much money into gold cards paying for games he wanted to download and all up into smoke, well I say good ridence Xbox and I wouldn’t call one of yr peggies for anything!

I generally don’t buy many used games but what are you supposed to do with older games that can’t be found for a reasonable price brand new? We have those right now with titles that are no longer manufactured or had a low print run. This will drive the price of those titles up for the 360.

I find anyone willing to buy a console where you have to subscribe to an online service is already dragging us in the wrong direction and apparently millions of gamers don’t mind it. Honestly, they can do as much as they want because I’m never going to get another Microsoft game system in my lifetime.

They already started this with Madden games and such a while ago. You can only play it online on the system you originally registered the disc to. Why does this move surprise everyone? They only did the first one to see if everyone would flip out before rolling this out. People will bitch at first, then they will still buy it, and then it will be the norm as other console makers follow suit. Rinse, repeat.

plus, if they go to a steam like system, and manage to pull it off even half as good as valve, itll definitely be a plus. there WILL be discounts on games, simply because there will actually be revenue going back to the company and not gamestop. companies have to charge more for games due to used games.

great move by microsoft. i dont think you guys understand that 0 profit of a used game sale goes to publishers, so any loss in sale means nothing. and no, if anything xbox is going to be more popular. publishers will understand xbox will generate the most revenue and make more xbo exclusive games, and there will be less exclusives for other consoles as well. in the end many will be forced to buy xbox simply cause it has better and more selection of games.

All banning used games would do, is drive consumers from their system. I had both an XBox and a 360, and I won’t buy into their next generation if they put these controls in place and Sony doesn’t.

Sounds like commercial suicide and murder!

The current trend of game publishers pushing up their prices means it’s hard enough for people to justify buying a new game, which is why many turn to the pre-owned market which quite frankly is massive.

Less new games will be sold = less revenue, individuals and more importantly retailers won’t be able to sell pre-owned games = murder or at least Grievous bodily harm to the game retailers, which are already struggling in the UK (Game, HMV)

I personally won’t be able to justify spending £40 on multiple games during the year like Call of Duty: MW6 for the Xbox 720, to play it on the campaign for 5 hours to complete it on VET and then play on line for a month or 2 before it becomes boring if I can’t sell it on, I can generally get £20-£30 back from selling a game like COD that is 3-6 months old through eBay

It is pure greed and stupidity, and will backfire badly on the platform if MS implement such a policy

they need to sort out the companies that pay almost nothing for a pre owned game and then re sell for almost the same as a new game. this is not the answer. same as the online pass idea. the pre owned dealers lose nothing and it isn’t reflected in the pre owned price that you may have to spend extra before u can play online. although i agree that pre opened sales have taken money from developers i think they should look at taking a cut from the big pre owned retailers rather than piling more cost on the ones who keep them in work.

Seriously, paying Netflix for Netflix, then being required to pay Microsoft for Netflix, shows how MS operates.

Regardless, a good game is a good game. THQ needs to stop blaming the medium the game is on as the reason they arent seeing the revenues they want to see. Thinking that requiring new purchases will somehow make their game more saleable is dumb as hell. I cant think of any other way to put it.

Have you looked at the price of digital downloads lately. Old games are still twice as much. and new games are equal to a physical copy. To this day they they make you pay an annual subscription to XBox live for Netflix. and you expect them to do the right thing now.

Just think about it, the packaging and distribution of disc account for at least 5 – 10 dollars. Also, look at the trends…. Steam, origin. Microsoft must be preparing a new digital download channel similar to what pc gamers have. Just imagine being able to pick up 6 month old titles for 10-15$. Forget trade ins, that sounds good to me.

I think the rumor is kind of misleading, xbox 720 will find a way to reward developers for used games by beige able to sell them digitally at a lower price later. They will also encourage digital downloads by having a lower price compared to hard disc purchases. What is eventually going to happen is the second hand market will disappear. This will be a result of the new system, not the aim.

This is too easy to backfire.

Games that aren’t must-haves from the start (think COD) will languish on shelves because
1) people that aren’t that serious will surely wait til it goes down in price, like always and
2) hardcore gamers that like the latest and greatest will be less likely to buy games that they know they can’t resell effectively to recoup costs.

Honestly, I think this is a huge move that could, and might, just backfire completely on game developers. Without people buying games at launch, you’re essentially relegating yourself to the bargain bin and selling them at 20-30$ a pop. Unless that is built into your business model, you’re probably gonna make less than you are right now. It’s not that big of a deal for a gamer to play MW3 (or by that time, MW4 or whatever) for a few more months online and wait for the price of a game to drop, knowing that it is essentially lost money as the game will be a coaster after buying.

Think long and hard game developers…

Lets milk them for DLC then sell DLC only in our stores then stop selling hard copies.

None of this is good for sales in an industry that is struggling…. I agree the game stops probably have to go….. or change.

Now I do really want an xbox 720 and an LG OLED TV so can both companies not mess those up ok please?

Wow- just another ploy to squeeze more money out of the consumer. There is no way I will buy a next gen system that doesn’t allow me to buy preowned games and play them. While I’m sure this is something being floated around to see what the reaction is- I certainly could see it happening.
Notice to the gaming industry- if you think this is the way to go, you better think long and hard about dropping prices for games. And you better make sure you have solid content. Because the minute a game gets hammered in reviews- there’s no way anyone is gonna buy it if there is no way to be able to recoup the cost of that 60 or 70 dollar game.

Here’s the way to revitalize the industry- make games people want. Develop games other than FPS shooters. Why are we so eager to find clever ways to screw people instead of finding clever ways to get people engaged? It’s such a copout, and a classic example of American capitalism gone awry.
