Worth Reading?

NoYes

The people over at Car & Driver must be weeping right about now.  They had an exclusive article previewing the Jaguar C-XF Concept to be shown at the Detroit Auto Show, but Edmunds have stolen their scoop and posted all the juicy details online.  Is this another sign of print-media’s gradually fading charm over the instantaneous gratuity of the internet?  I’m not going to even touch that one with a barge poll; instead let’s drool a little over this stunning, Ian Callum-designed four-door coupé.

Jaguar C-XF Concept

Powered by the XKR’s 4.2-litre supercharged V8 engine, mated to a six-speed automatic gearbox, the concept is said to have “in excess of” 420bhp and 368lb ft of torque, which would cosy up to a 180mph top speed or thereabouts.  But it’s the appearance of the damn thing that’s so pleasing – aggressive, obviously a Jag but not old-fashioned and tweedy.  Let’s just hope that they carry the design on into the production model, eh?

Very Aston-Martin-ish to my eye, which makes some sense considering they’re both owned by Ford and one recent Jag (I can’t remember the model) borrowed from the DB7’s design.

If you make it, people will buy it. Including me, if I somehow stumble across enough money to do so.

Blame not only the shared ownership but the same parentage of design: Ian Callum was responsible for many of the recent Aston Martin designs before transferring to Jag. While they’re all gorgeous, I can’t help but wish there was a little more brand distinction – so that an Aston is definitely an Aston, and a Jag a Jag – rather than them getting saddled with the old “oh it looks like…”

Might it be the recent XK you’re thinking of that was similar to the DB7? Again, same designer for both.

Yes, it was the XK. Not quite a studly or brain-meltingly sexy as the 7, but as a poor man’s Aston it will do.

And isn’t that an interesting definition of the word “poor”? :)
