Quit hating! It is a pretty cool piece of technology. It’s an Android phone, and playstation built into one device. You have the familiar playstation controls to play games with, or you can browse the web, make a phone call, listen to some tunes. I love Android anyway, so you can’t go wrong with this imo. My cousin Matt has one. I’ve rooted it, installed GBA, SNES, Sega Genesis, PSX emulators and even downloaded the full versions of the “games for xperia play” for free for him. He loves it, and I love it. How can you say it’s not for “hardcore” gamers when it has an effing playstation controller built into it? And how “hardcore” do you want it to be? I mean it is a phone, it’s meant to be a phone and portable enjoyment, wtf? And remember back in the day, you used to play those SNES, Sega, GBA, and PS1 games and were happy with it. That’s a reason to get it for me is all the retro gaming on the go. But it also has a pretty decent list of more modern games. Don’t judge a book by it’s cover. If you’re not a complete NooB like the guy who wrote this article then you might want to check one out for youself. And did this guy ever stop to think that not everybody is going to “jump” at the PS Vita? The Vita will be bigger than this phone, and probably won’t be with you all of the time like your phone is. I’m not saying the Vita isn’t going to be an incredible product, but give the Xperia Play a try. If you don’t like it, then don’t like it. At least give it a try. Me for example, I don’t like iPhones or Apple products. And I have quite a list as to why, let’s not get started on that debate…

sir, i have a question and rather a query ….im planning to buy an Xperia play and i just want to know how to run all the various games on the phone…like where do i download the games from…how do i play psp games on it? how do i play ps1 or ps2 games on it? or even normal gameboy roms on it? could u plz help me out? and r the games freE??i would really appreciate it if u could… thnk u…if u want u cud mail me the info at

you do realize it is a phone as well…not strictly a gaming device. Ive owned an xperia play for about 2 months now and loe have snes and ps1 emualtors both work great, not too mention the ever growing list of games being released. I agree with some ppl on here who needs more then 50 games if your looking for that kind of a device. get a psp or something that is strictly dedicated to gaming only. Imo a great phone, wouldnt replace it for any other.

I won’t miss not playing 1000 casual games but i will really desperate not having played one final fantasy game or MGS. for me a few hardcore game is good enough to buy this phone and i will have the opportunity to replay my ps1 faves.

I’m disappointed to see that the XPERIA Play will come with only about 50 games at launch. That figure will of course be higher over time, but considering there are thousands of games available on the iPhone

im disappointed the iphone only has thousands, when there are millions of games you could conceivably play with two dice.

YES, dice have been around longer, but even though the playstation phone is still unlaunched, having ***ONLY*** 50 games to play on day one is pathetic.

I mean, wait… I the iphone game selection is dismal.

I mean, look: unless every game ever even thought of, whether or not it actually was produced is available on DAY ONE, I will not be happy.

Can I work for you guys? I think my writing style lines up pretty good with the general vibe here.

And i got a phone which runs Android games, webOS games, Nintendo 64 games, Playstation 1 Games, SNES games, GBA, and still goin’ on. It can use Wii remotes and Playstation 3′s joystick. It can also do vice versa. It’s also completely cheap to it’s real value. for 250€ you get one.

If I have to carry a Wii controller along with my phone, I’d rather carry a NDS or a PSP instead… Considering the PSP has perfect results with PSOne emulation + lots of other game consoles and computers (GBA, SNES, NES, Genesis, N64, Amiga, ScumVM, Mame, Game Gear, Master System, PCEngine, Neo Geo…) and plays all the PSP titles, and since it won’t ruin your smartphone battery, it’s a no-brainer.

blah .I’m stoked for this thing. honestly ill take the control pad for the emulators alone. the fact that ill be able to play just about any psone game just adds a bonus. So when you think about it., there is whole a selection of games in itself. at least that I’m interested in. Different gamer, different needs I suppose. Have fun playing your shovelware on your iphone. To call those games any kind of hardcore is an insult to hardcore gamers everywhere. You are missing the point of this system and obviously have no idea what your talking about..

Well first of all it will remove the need to carry a second device around. Secondly video game emulators are likely to support the buttons directly, and if not you can map them. Thirdly for most people who want a gaming device, and are aware of emulators (there are many) it negates any problems.

Remember, when this comes out those with phones of 2009 standards will be able to replace their contract with a new one, and when they get that option the pad will weigh heavily on their decisions.

I’m certainly considering it when I replace my iPhone 3GS.

why do you think that? Most guys I know who use emulators, are already using a WII controller.

It’s nice to have the controls built in, but I’m not going to jump out and replace my droidx with similar hardware, simply for controls that I already have via another mechanism.

Rarely have I read a more irrelevant argument.

It doesn’t launch with 50 games, it launches will all Android games and 50 dedicated. Which for a Launch is fine. Sony have a proven track record with games. Open it up to Emulation and you’ve got as others have said access to all NES, SNES etc games and will be able to control them properly. This is thousands and thousands.

It is a little underpowered as it’s no higher spec than others. But then not much is currently higher specc’d either so sits in the middle.

Sony do need to prove their pedigree in Android market, but can’t do that without innovation.

I am looking forward to this phone. I want to wait and see how it performs before committing as Sony will still have a games store on the Android Market so I’m lead to believe, but is obviously easier to control with a controller(Clue is in the name)

Other things important are camera, real flash and phone.

Also someone said that we were being unrealistic to ask for NGP with Phone features.

I think that’s exactly where we are heading and will see that within the next 3/4 years. Currently the price point would be prohibative.. So Sony are making the NGP, I would imagine once they recoup some of their initial costs they’ll add phone features certainly GPS.

Sony products tend to take a few years for them to recoup their money and then they release a new version Slim normally.

Gaming phones are the future, they should also be a universal Blue tooth remote for all your home entertainment and if you have it remote power management of your house. This technology is available now. Just waiting on billy consumer to catch up.

Playstation’s new gaming store, and the control pad brings a lot to the market.
The Xperia Play will, without a doubt, become the premium phone for old skool gaming emulators. It definitely has a market down to the controller alone.

The PlayStation brand has a loyal following and hype has been build-ed up for years around the “PlayStation Phone”. Now that it is announced that it will soon be released I have little doubt in it’s success. The only thing that might hold PlayStation fans back in buying the Xperia Play is if they won’t release a huge library of PlayStation 1 games on the phone and if they really force users to re buy games already bought in the PlayStation Store.
