Humans have necks.
when you look down you "push"
when you look up you "pull"

This is the reason elevator flaps work the way they do on aircraft (push rudder to go down) and the reason why some people (like me) CANNOT understand or comprehend others who play FPS games with the "up" being "up" on their control interface.

reading a page onscreen is the same, if you wan to go down you "look" down (or you scroll the text "up") the logic and perspective is the same.

HOWEVER to manipulate an object , a file or a THING it's another story. One is not moving the POV in that case, they are interacting with the "world" and so "up is up" and "down is down".

take a game for example.

Normal FPS game, no interaction other than shooting, point reticle at switches. The players perspective never changes, the whole gameworld is seen as if the monitor is the charatcters head.

Same game third person view. CAMERA ALWAYS FORWARD
The perspective is thrown out of whack for a moment but you can still adapt.

Same game third person view. DYNAMIC CAMERA
*Biohazard etc.
It's a headache. And the reason for that is that you don't know if you are controlling the camera, the head, the arms or the objects in the game.

Apple that people should stop making the distinction between objects and text. Between their mouse cursor (hands) and POV (head).

I bet things a gonna get reaaaly funky when we hit real 3D OS / Virtual systems. After all. Will we manipulate the space or will we move in it? I think people should always have the choice to decide what suits them best.

Really well done article. I don't own a Mac but I always find user interface choices and the process of making them very intriguing. As far as icons and representation goes, my favorite right now is Microsoft approach to representation in WP7. The white silhouette of the object over a flat background as well as a heavy emphasis on large print typography throughout the OS is extremely visually appealing to me.

I like the idea of scrolling working apposite. Asus actually did it first with the Transformer, which is genius in that form factor. Going from using the tablet for scrolling to using the mouse pad it is very intuitive to have this reversed.
