Steampunk Violin ModFor anyone that is a major music lover and also enjoys when technology updates the classic instruments a bit, this mod is worth checking out. It was recently featured at Maker Faire.

It was created by Molly “Porkshanks” Friedrich for Nathan Johnstone, which is likely who was playing it at the Main Music Stage at Maker Faire over the weekend. The pretty but fake vacuum tubes have LED lights inside that flash pretty colors as it feels the strings vibrate.

I’m curious how the overall sound worked out at the Faire, since the shape of the violin is what creates the sound. Sadly no videos have popped up thus far to give a sampling as to what it sounds like. Either way, it definitely looks cool.

It looks awesome. I’m sure it sounded just fine. That’s a pretty standard electric violin. It looks like a Yamaha. So it sounded just as good as whatever amp it was going through.

Yeah, I was there and actually spent a great deal of time with both Abney Park and Porkshanks. The violin is gorgeous in person and sounds exactly how it should. Not to mention that the flashing lights changed colors based on the frequency of the vibrations.
