My daughter likes pink. Pink heels, pink dresses, pink jewelry, pink lipstick.
My boy doesn't like pink, he likes black. Black heels, black dresses, black jewelry, black lipstick.

So, I guess our son is normal.

my son also loved pink as a child because it was usually the brightest, most vivid color,,,,not to mention, it was mommys favorite also :-) i wish there wasnt such a stereotype on colors also but I can see the reason when trying to sell many products. Unfortunately my son wont use pink things anymore with his only reason now being that "boys dont like pink mom!" ugghhhh

I don't want to turn this into a flame war, but...
Your argument is 1/3 Appeal to Authority and 1/3 Ad Hominem fallacy. I'll ignore those parts. Color preference not being a diagnostic criteria for any mental health disorder is a valid argument.

Color isn't specifically mentioned in the DSM IV for asperger's (I don't know about the rest of the book). In my case my intense interest in specific colors shows "patterns of interest that [are] abnormal either in intensity or focus." There are many stories online providing anecdotal evidence that, though not a DSM diagnostic criteria, a complete inflexibility with sensory stimuli such as color can certainly be an indicator worth exploring. My concern was that his son shared this same manifestation of an Asperger's symptom. As Philip stated, and was supported by Johnnie, this is not abnormal for a 3 year old. As I said earlier, I just don't know what's normal for a 3 year old. Based on this I no longer have a reason to suspect that his son has Asperger's.

As long as I'm on here I may as well apologize to Philip. I hadn't considered that my comment could be offensive and it probably would have been more appropriate to send a private message. I don't think I would have been able to ignore my suspicion because of how much your son's preferences in color are like my own. I am glad to hear that it's normal at that age.

Im a psychotherapist (and geek obviously). Im licensed inseveral states with my degrees (3 masters) from U Tx-Austin (and a crapload of certifications and 2 diplomates). All that said to establish my credentials (not to brag). I am a recognised expert in my field and i get paid well to testify in court. My testimony regarding diagnoses has successfully refuted many psychologists and psychiatrists. That being said, colour preference is not, and has never been, a diagnostic criteria for any mental health disorder. Just as your comment or name selection on this site does not qualify you to be diagnosed with mental retardation, asperger's disorder, or cognitive disorder. Your lack of education, training, and understanding of my field simply identifies you as one who speaks from ignorance. Ignorance can be fixed.
Philip, you are a great dad for allowing your son to be himself. Colour preference has never indicated sexual orientation. Thats social crap.

As a father of both a daughter and a son, it's kind of stunning to look at the marketing aimed at children and how limiting it is. As somebody who also has an aesthetic streak, it's heart-breaking to have whole sections of the palette cordoned off from them.

I hope they can find and choose friends who also think the distinction between girl-colors and boy-colors is stupid. And if they can't, I hope they don't listen to them.

nope.. can't think of much in the way of practical ideas, other than manufacturers designing their products to be customizable. (with the truck at least, it shouldn't be a great engineering challenge to switch out a plastic pre-formed element, as long as the device is designed for it) though now I come to think of it, that would mean user accessible attachment points (screws and such) and they do try to avoid that as much as possible.

It is kinda a shame... manufacturers do need to sell to the mass market, but simultaneously play a role in developing the markets by the products they offer. Kinda a no-win spiral as regards changing cultural perceptions.

I agree with you. I did admit it wouldn't work in practical terms, for just the reasons you described. Maybe it was a cop-out for me not to provide real world solutions, only a theoretical goal. Can you think of any ways a manufacturer might actually get involved in this cultural issue, while still turning a profit?

Why would we remove gender from the equation? I mean... I quite agree with you... I've go no issue with a guy liking the color pink, but I'm just looking at this from the manufacturers perspective.

There's a certain amount of realism that has to be dealt with... if the manufacturer is going to release their product, and has to pick 3 colors for it, then it's only natural that they are going to pick the 3 colors that appeal to the broadest percentage of their target market, and while it may be stereotypical to say that boys like certain colors, in this case at least, there's a certain amount of truth to the stereotype as it applies to the average population. Isn't it appropriate for them to make choices based on gender, if that information is both true and meaningful?

You've said, "your goal is to change perceptions" but we have to remember that this isn't the goal of the manufacturers. Their goal is to sell product, and if kids are going to (on average) choose the truck with a different color, that's what they are going to make. I'm reminded of the episode of the Simpsons, where Lisa makes a doll that doesn't display the negative stereotypes of femininity. The pyrrhic victory was a plus from Lisa's perspective, but from the manufacturers perspective, it wasn't a win.

I'm not the type to get offended by this sort of comment, I see where you're coming from. But you should be very careful suggesting to parents, especially parents of young children, that their children could have autism, or any mental issues. Trust me, this is normal for a 3 year old.

The color pink isn't what bugs me, it's the extent of the preference. I'm thinking your son may be somewhere on the autistic spectrum. Or that could be normal for a 3 year old, I don't spend much time around them.

I commend you on the "security in your manhood" and for that of your son's. I fully agree with you, that this color nonsense is, well, nonsense. I will say I'm not a big fan of pink, but I am a fan of bright colors, particularly bright purple, which I guess would mean I'm gay or something? Whatever.

While I support your direction here, I also understand that most people aren't like us. They wouldn't buy the pink item for their son. It's for this reason, you can expect, that vendors don't want to risk having a product sit on the shelf, because it's the wrong color.

What I might suggest is that all vendors head down the path of allowing custom skins. That way, you (and everyone else) can get the color they want, with little effort. I can't imagine it would be too hard, since they can easily skin an entire vehicle... why not skin a device? Make the base "aluminum" or "metal" colored, then let people put on whatever color they want. In case of cellphones, it would prevent the idiocy and premium that Apple has created for white devices since you can make the same product "underneath" and the customer can make whatever color they really want. (I'm not a fan of white devices.) What's more, this skinning (though it can get scratched easily) is cheap, thin, lightweight, and can be reapplied or changed easily - it beats the dumb plastic/rubber things we have today, and keeps the device svelte.
