Those are terrible logos. C'mon man. MS has a fine logo as it is. Your logo should show hints of your company name or what it does. Great logos such as the Brewers Baseball team, Tour de france, Tostitos etc. A slash going forward looks not only lazy, but silly. Get back to drawing board or should I say Illustrator and try again.

Agreed. His reasoning is sound, there are aspects of his execution that I would say could be improved on. I'm tempted to mock up a presentation myself after looking it over.

But he has the right idea.

I actually looked over his full presentation, and its not only well designed, it makes perfect sense. And he didn't rip anyone off. There is nearly no such thing as an original design as every good Graphic Designer knows. Hell, design students know that much.

Apple's designs and branding aren't even original. Innovation is more important than originality, as are results, and the quality of your communication.

Here is a tip, mimic the results of successful people, see if you're life doesn't significantly change and/or improve. See, results are more important than methodology. Its why college graduates aren't so hot in the job market right now.

They've learned theoretically how to do something and have to compete with people who have actually produced a result for a CEO before.

This designer Kim, obviously understands what needs to be communicated to consumers by Microsoft, and I think they should pay attention to this direction. This is one concept and it goes in the right direction. If you want to know how I qualify my opinion... GOOGLE ME.

"
Now, it could do a lot worse than give Kim a call and chat future brand strategy."

They could sell a box with just a brick in it instead on computing equipment. Not MUCH worse than hiring some kid to rip off apple's box design, but it is worse.

Hum, METRO has to be in upper case, and put a border around it (like a Metro sign?). Not the most refined ideas. And I'm pretty sure the Surface logo is owned by someone else.

Microsoft must hire him for branding so he can just rip off more packaging ideas from other companies? Come on guy. How did someone that blatantly just ripped of an Apple design get to be featured in an article :P

Nice effort, but that logo kinda sucks. It neither implies "Windows" or "Surface." In fact, it doesn't communicate anything at all to me.
