There could be another reason for the lack of smartphone use in the heartland. I live just 30 miles west of Ann Arbor, MI -- home of a certain Big House -- but even basic DSL wasn't available until the end of October. If you've ever suffered with a satellite ISP or used a wireless plan, you know all too well about cap-and-throttle or cap-and-overcharge. The policy is MURDER to those with families and homework requiring internet access on a regular basis. Wireless data charges stink and none of us have anything good to say about them. It's hard enough to monitor your own usage on an aircard, but when you have a family that "needs to use the crack pipe" to get online, it gets ugly. My husband, kids and I all have dumbphones, and we don't have to babysit a bandwidth meter anymore.

I live in the NW suburbs of Minneapolis and work in the IT department of a college in St. Paul. Tons of staff at the college own smartphones...and not just those of us in the IT department either. Android smartphones seem to be particularly popular amongst my peers.
I live about 45 min. SW of Minneapolis and a lot of people still look at me and my OG Droid as if I'm cutting edge. I think I was easily one of the first people I knew with a smartphone. However, the number has increased dramatically in the last year or so. Now I'd say close to 50% of the people I know have smart phones now. I think Android also has a slight lead over iPhone too.
