The lack of Flash limits the potential if the iPad. I have one and use it all the time, but when I’m doing research, I often have to hit a real PC when video is involved. It’s a shame, too. The ipad would be darned near perfect if it had the ability to access the full web without having to do workarounds (at a cost) or jailbreak the device.

Of course my 24 inches screen hooked to my pc bomb offers me a “complete” experience but I don’t need all that power and richness in my living room crashed comfortable on my sofa. The iPad procures just enough. I just don’t understand what I would need more while watching tv. That’s all…

VPN to a computer hooked up to the TV is far from convenient. I used to do it, and am glad that that I haven’t had to for the past couple years. 99.9% of my TV interaction is handled via a universal remote. When I decide to do any browsing, my smartphone operates as a wireless keyboard/mouse for the rare times I need it.

Of course, that’s dependent on having the best channel guide out there on the HTPC (Windows Media Center), so needing a separate screen and a VPN is

In short, a Harmony remote is by far the best investment one can make when it comes to the living room, bar none.

For quick look ups, the value added by an iPad is negligible compared to already having a smartphone. Using IMDb as an example, it’s just as easy to use the IMDb app for your phone as it is an iPad for quick look ups. If you start doing any kind of ‘in-depth’ surfing, the iPad quickly reveals its limitations.

I had an iPad for about a month, but quickly realized that the ‘in-between’ space it occupies really didn’t do much for me, and can understand the points raised in the article.

Xoom has an amazing browser, tabbed browsing, and all that goodness. it is my living room companion. but I see what you mean.

or get Google TV. that would do look-up’s, netflix, YouTube and all that with ease

I do like Android’s voice interaction. Didn’t find that to be the case with the iPad but voice engancements will probably get better with time.

…not every website deserve an app. Only the one that have a huge database and only if they reformat the UI for the tablet format(whatever tablet). It’s, for exemple, much more simple to find an info with a mobile app version of some websites for all the obvious reasons. Do the test. Try to reach for a movie info on IMDB, for exemple, on your laptop, PC/mac and your iPhone/iPad/android phone/tablet.
On the other hand, I don’t use the Engadget app, for exemple, to browse their site. The exeperience is better and simplier the web app. It really depends on the website itself. IMDB, TED, eBay, iFixit and other huge content database, for instance, found their ultimate niche with the tablet advent…

Wow. I Couldn’t Disagree More! The iPad is a perfect complement to my coffee table. It allows me and my wife to do spot research all the time. Maybe for a professional blogger it isn’t up to snuff. Also, hooking a Mac Mini up to an HDTV… I am confused, can you still watch tv?

The only problem with the iPad for us is that there is only one. Two would be even better. I just read my first book on the iPad (Let The Right One In ((Swedes are creepy))) and can see me reading more if i could only pry it out of my wife’s hands for longer than a few minutes.

This article is interesting for considering how we use technology. The iPad was promoted as a living room surfing device… yet I find that I surf so much while watching tv that a laptop is most suitable due to having a proper keyboard, speed, flash, and multiple tabs. Still the iPad gives much of the functionality of a laptop in a more interactive, portable, and simplified format.

Something the AppleTV does not currently do by default, but should, is stream all iPad applications in full screen. Currently, such applications as Safari and VLC do not use the whole screen and leave black space all around. Any idea if there is a solution for this?

…doesn’t need to be productive in the living room. It’s called the living room not the office room. To get info about an actress, for exemple, it’s much more simple with the ipad because there is an app for it IMDB. With any laptop you would need to go on the net then search on IMDB database to find the answer. And you’ld need both hands for this task. With the tablet, 2 taps on the screen and its done.
This is just one exemple of the simplicity of the ipad or any tablet versus a computer as a living room companion…

There are some single tasks that iPad would do, like shutting a câmera through wifi, to take natural pics of friends meeting whit câmera on a tripod. Or to have a option to to switch between iPad speakers or computer high quality sound, through iTunes. Or sichronize tasks with the most used softs ans sites, like Google or Facebook contacts to came into iPad.

But apple misunderstood the potential of the version 1 before launching the second iPad.

And the dictionary is a shame. In portuguese it don’t recognize trivial words. And now, writing in english, i have to fight against a CrAzY translator, that sugest a misspeling in every Word that i wrote. This isn’t such a cosmopolitan tablet.
