It's *not* 4G: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/4G

4G is defined as GIGABIT speeds, and no one is even CLOSE to that. This is 3.5G at best, but marketing departments can't sell that. Let's just call it what it is!

LTE isn't going to be cheaper in my opinion, at least during initial launch for the consumer. If the 5GB caps are removed and you are allowed a truely unlimited amount of data per billing cycle then it may be worth it as it is mobile. But being mobile they would have to have significant LTE coverage to make it worth the price tag in my opinion.

I'm not excited at all. Considering that the current 3G network struggles to perform anywhere close to 2G's advertised speed, I doubt that users will get anywhere near the speeds promised for LTE service.

I have an AT&T microcell that uses your broadband connection instead of going through the tower, and I still get 3G speeds that make dial-up look fast. It's not the towers. It's their internal network that is slammed. Considering that independent tests show AT&T is still faster than Verizon, adding towers that consume more bandwidth can't possibly improve their overall performance.

They sure like to market high numbers, but have trouble delivering anywhere near the speeds they promise. Well sir, our ads clearly state "UP TO", but we make

Unfortunately more speed won't do us much good. I locked in two unlimited connections from Clear last year, because we're moving towards tiered services. In that case, 4G will just allow you to hit your cap all the faster. Thanks worthless service providers... you're the worst.

Good article.

Multi-party video is the killer app though? Seriously? How about just decent quality video streaming? How about that? It will be a FAR larger percentage of this traffic than video conferencing.

Similarly, tethering becomes far more realistic with the speeds being quoted, except for that whole ridiculous pricing, capped like crazy issue. If that weren't a problem, this might be a realistic alternative for a lot of people to something like Comcast. And given how Comcast has been acting lately that is A GOOD THING.
