The Division won't have microtransactions, except it will

I'm pretty excited for Tom Clancy's The Division. I was cautiously excited until the beta, where my brother and I spent a good while mowing down enemies together. While it wasn't a perfect experience, it had all of the elements that I was looking for in a co-op MMORPG shooter. One of the biggest things I've been wondering is whether or not the game would have microtransactions, which can ruin any gaming experience.

Over the weekend, one of the community managers at Ubisoft confirmed that there will be "no microtransactions, and definitely no P2W." There's nothing that can destroy an online game faster than pay-to-win items, so I'm really happy to hear this news.

Something interesting to note is that the company will be selling vanity items via DLC. Vanity items are usually new clothing, and weapon skins that have no bearing on the actual gameplay. Such items are typically also considered microtransactions, as they tend to have a small price, when compared to the game's initial cost, or other, larger pieces of downloadable content.

Regardless of the possibility of vanity items as microtransactions or DLC (you say tomato, I say microtransactions), it's good that Ubisoft is listening to fans who don't want pay-to-win items to be offered. After all, nothing can kill a good game like poor microtransactions. Just ask Overkill Software, the developers behind Payday 2.
