What’s worse is that the flash doesn’t actually seem to be necessary:  judging from this video, “page turn” updates don’t flash, so it must be technically possible to change the display contents without flashing; I guess they just got lazy. On the plus side, of course, page turns don’t seem to flash…

The other “must have” feature for me is CJK support (real support, i.e., CJK fonts + vertical layout support, not “you can read books where all the pages are big images”), but unfortunately that seems very low priority for companies like B&N.  [Sony readers seem to have CJK support, but always strike me as kinda clunky in other ways, and are much more expensive than the book-seller-branded ereaders.]
