so….. how did these observers determine the people were texting? It sounds like they merely identified people who were visibly interacting with a phone. What if they were clicking over to the next song on the music player using the car-dock feature? What if they were interacting with their GPS? What if they were doing any of the inumerable things which require only one or two button presses?

The problem is that unless one of your own is one of the 3, 092 deaths reported, people will not listen.
Paying attention while we drive whether we are eating, listening to music, or using a hands free device is the most important thing. Texting to me is like reading a book while you drive. Read it when you get home. Cars don’t drive themselves.

Let’s be honest. It’s trivial for phone and car manufacturers to provide hands-free (and eyeball-free) technology that saves lives — the necessary hardware costs mere pennies and the solutions are well documented — but safety and convenience are something they’d like to gouge us for.

Look at auto-off headlights for another example.

EVERY and I mean EVERY single driver I have seen weaving in traffic, driving too slow, has been on the phone, talking/texting.
