The idea of allowing cell phones in airplanes was shot down once again this year. But Australian airline Qantas has announced that they will allow their passengers to send and receive text messages and email while in the air.

Qantas 767

They will conduct a 3-month trial of this program to see the effects of using cell phones during flight. Qantas will select one of their Boeing 767 for the trial-run. They will not be informing the passengers of which aircraft is being used in the trial until they board it.

I think this would be great, I would love to at least be able to send text messages and check my email on a flight. They may extend this trial to include voice calls in the future, but I wouldn’t get your hopes up.
