Tethered jailbreak for iOS 5.1 available on non-A5 devices

Well, that was certainly quick. iOS 5.1 hasn't even been with us for 24 hours, but already there's a tethered jailbreak. It's not all good news though: it's only available for devices not running Apple's A5. That means you won't be able to get in on the action on the iPad 2, iPhone 4S, or "the new" iPad when it ships on March 16th.

If you have the original iPad, an iPhone 4, or 3rd/4th generation iPod Touch, then you can enjoy the jailbreak right now. Just remember, it is of the tethered variety, which means if you need to reboot, or run out of battery, you'll have to find a PC/Mac and use redsnow to "Just Boot" and keep the party going.

It has become increasingly difficult for the Dev Team to keep on top of untethered jailbreaks for new Apple products and iOS updates. The latest version of Ultrasn0w for A5 based devices was released at the end of January, three months after the iPhone 4S' October 14th release. The iPad 2 was similar, first released on March 11th 2011, and not seeing a jailbreak until July 5th.

If you're feeling dangerous and want to give the tethered jailbreak a try, head on over to Think iOS for the instructions and list of caveats.
