I really don't like it when companies update apps for smartphones, game consoles, or any other platform and brag about the update, yet offer only mild details of what the update brings. YouTube has done just that with an overhaul of its Xbox 360 app announced yesterday. The overhaul has more to do with ads than anything else.

YouTube overhauls app for Xbox 360 viewers
Google Glass aimed patent grabs auto-recognition of everyday objects
Google has been granted a new patent that could potentially be pretty huge for the company. The patent is for automatic object recognition, which is usually quite difficult to pull off due to the need for human input. With Google's patent, humans don't need to do anything, as the system would make use of "feature vectors" to aid in the recognition of the objects in a video or still image.

Google brings TrueView in-stream video ads to mobile devices
With more and more Internet users streaming video on their smartphones and tablets, Google is constantly looking for ways to monetize all of that. One of the ways the company is doing that is by bringing TrueView in-steam ads to YouTube videos on mobile devices. YouTube product group manager Phil Farhi announced these new mobile ads on the Google Mobile Ads Blog, and told TrueView users what they can expect now that mobile devices have been tossed into the mix.

Google releases native YouTube app for PlayStation 3
PlayStation 3 owners have been able to access YouTube on their consoles for some time, but the experience was a little messy, to say the least. Google has rolled out a new app for the PlayStation 3 today, bringing with it a much needed graphical makeover along with improved search capabilities. iOS 6 YouTube loss opens door to iCloud video share rival
Apple's decision to junk the iOS 6 YouTube app has prompted no small degree of surprise from iPhone and iPad owners, more used to platform upgrades adding functionality than removing it, but the multimedia outlook isn't grim. Google is already working on a replacement app - which this time it will maintain and distribute itself - while Apple highlights that YouTube video playback already works within Safari and doesn't demand the standalone software anyway. However, rather than just pushing Google's services further to the periphery, there's also the chance that Apple could move to fill the ensuing gap with a video offering of its own.

SlashGear Evening Wrap-Up: August 6, 2012
We're back to Monday folks, but thankfully this particular Monday provided us with a lot of interesting news. Of course, Apple and Samsung's court battle is still raging on, with Samsung today claiming that Apple pressured 3G experts to change evidence. Apple detailed the icons it accuses Samsung of ripping off, while Samsung made a case for the uniqueness of its handsets up on the stand. Samsung was looking pretty decent there for a while, until an expert Apple witness took the stand to say that the iPhone and the original Galaxy S were "substantially the same." Ouch.

You don’t want Apple’s YouTube anyway
This afternoon it became apparent to sharp-eyed developers working with the newest beta release of iOS 6 that Apple’s mobile operating system was about to drop YouTube from its ranks of built-in apps. As the press picked up the story and Apple replied with what essentially added up to, ‘yes, we’re done with Google’s YouTube now, you can download it yourself once Google puts the app out themselves”, there was a bit of an uproar on the part of next-generation iPhone customer hopefuls. But here’s the truth, ladies and gentlemen: it’s better this way, much better.
YouTube kicked from iOS 6, Apple comments
This week it appears that Apple is taking the war to Google in more places than just the courtroom as the dedicated YouTube app long-present in the basic build of iOS for iPhone and iPad has been nixed in the beta for iOS 6. This move by Apple has the potential to deal a massive blow to Google as the owner of the world’s most popular online video service, while no sign has been shown yet of what Apple intends to replace the omnipotent mobile staple with. Apple has included YouTube as an app on every version of the iPhone since its launch in 2007 – until now.
Lollapalooza live stream presented this year by YouTube
The annual Lollapalooza Music Festival is getting underway in Chicago today, but if you can't make it, you're not being left out entirely. Just like last year, YouTube will be streaming the entire event, and all you need to do to check it out is head over to YouTube's Lollapalooza channel. YouTube coaxes out real names to combat comment cruelty
YouTube may be looking to encourage users to use their real identities and names when posting comments on videos in the future. According to Wired, whenever you upload a new video or post a comment, YouTube will ask if it can use your real identity that has been associated with your Google+ account. Users can opt out of using their real names, although YouTube will then ask why they declined.
