Billboard now takes YouTube views into account in its Hot 100 formula

Billboard has been offering up charts that show which songs are the most popular in the country and around the world for decades. The company has had its Hot 100 chart for 55 years and the formula used to determine which songs go on that chart has now been changed. Billboard has announced that it now takes a number of plays a song has had on YouTube into account when figuring Hot 100 rankings.

YouTube no longer working on Blackberry 7 or 7.1 devices

Many Blackberry users running Blackberry OS 7 or 7.1 on their devices have been reporting that they can no longer view YouTube videos through the YouTube app on their device. While they're still able to search for the videos, they aren't able to play them. The issue seems isolated to only OS 7 and 7.1 devices, while users with Blackberry OS 5 and 6 are reporting that their YouTube app is working just fine.

Google+ becomes the second most popular social network behind Facebook

Move over Twitter, because according to Trendstream's Global Web Index for Q4 2012, Google+ has managed to move into the second-place spot for social platforms. This puts it behind Facebook (although by a significant amount of users), with YouTube also managing to top Twitter. Now Twitter is in fourth place in terms of total active users, at least according to Trendstream's collected data.

Google apps on iPhone and iPad quickly gaining steam

Google spent a lot of time in the last part of 2012 improving its iOS app offerings through updates, and today we're hearing that those updates did quite a bit to boost market share. Though many of Google's apps will of course always be popular regardless of the platform, the company's iOS apps are looking pretty good going into 2013. Onavo Insights today published a list of the Google iOS apps that saw their market share grow as 2012 came to a close, with YouTube and Google Maps perhaps making some of the biggest gains.

Netflix has officially detailed its Apple AirPlay alternative, DIAL, created in collaboration with YouTube and promising intuitive second-screen entertainment. Already garnering the support of the BBC, Sony, Hulu, and Samsung, DIAL - or "discovery and launch" - aims to streamline the second-screen experience, by automatically discovering compliant devices and starting up apps on them. So, the Netflix app on your phone will be able to spot any Netflix-compatible TVs nearby, and open up the functionality instantly.
