Remember those Sony XPERIA Play commercials awhile back? The ones that made the iPhone’s touchscreen seem like a miserable game playing experience? Well, here’s a concept that could change that, or at least appease the gaming thumbs of dissatisfied iPhone 4 owners.

The concept is designed by Alan Li, who imagines a type of extension accessory that slides together both forming a protective case and turning the iPhone 4 into a portable gaming device. The sleek design upholds Apple’s aesthetic while adding a joypad, four-button game control, and external speakers.

The accessory if it ever becomes a reality will surely make gaming thumbs happy. But, Apple would certainly have to work out some deal with Sony to get any quality console-like games that would require full-on game controls. I don’t see that happening.

We’ve seen a good deal of design concepts that incorporate some sort of folding method to create a hybrid device and improve portability such as with the LG Tryptych folding smartphone/tablet concept. And despite tablet and smartphone combos being the rage right now, the Feno concept designed by Niels Van Hoof goes back to tackling the good old notebook. His foldable notebook design features a unique folding method that makes the portable size just slightly wider than the diameter of a DVD.

The Feno design concept is very Apple-esque in its clean and sleek aluminum look, although its renderings are showing a Windows desktop. But what makes it unique is that the concept involves folding into thirds, with the screen being folded in half right through the center. Van Hoof imagines utilizing flexible OLED display technology to allow the screen to be wrapped around the body of the notebook. A unique hinge with a curved cavity lets the screen bend without creasing.

The keyboard area is shortened by removing the typical trackpad and replacing it with a small portable mouse that can be inserted into the side of the notebook. Van Hoof claims that the shortened keyboard depth also allows folks to type without having to rest their wrists on a flat surface, thus making for better ergonomics.

Hopefully, when flexible OLED displays become standard, we wont have to deal with the annoying split-screen effect of the Kyocera Echo and the Sony S2.

Is Samsung planning to enter the portable gaming market? And if so, should they? Here is an interesting concept by designer Dumary Joseph. It is called “Consolr HD3 by Samsung” (ummm, the name needs a bit of work), and has some crazy features, and according to Yanko Design is “a fanboi’s pipe dream about the ultimate gaming machine”. After all, the best concepts are those that go past what we can currently accomplish. Check out all the details after the cut.

This beasty little console has features like fingerprint recognition so it knows who is playing and can adjust, WiFi, 4G, GPS…

Well, just check out this list (also, more pics in the gallery):

16:9 full HD Amoled Multi touch screen Capacitive type with DTP (Dual Touch Pro for multitouch capability)

Built-in HD Stereo Speakers

Built-in HD Microphone

Gyroscope, accelerometer, ambient light sensor

2 analog sticks

Chat with your friends ( Wimax or 4G), by text, headset bluetooth or Visio

Download Apps from the Android Market

Share content and download movies

Synchronize content with your Android phone

Built-in GPS System with HP Localization (high precision mode)

Follow your contacts in real time on the map (MAPlayers zone app)

Front Camera 8MP HD and 3D 12MP rear camera

Visio Gaming (watch your friends through the screen and play with them by Visio

M.I.S.S. touch buttons (Media, I+,Select, Start buttons vibrate to confirm your order and illuminate when you turn the Consolor on

The Swin’ Bar allows player to access all the contents, volume, 3D effects, camera settings etc…

Mobile Network connectivity: 4G, Bluetooth 2.1, WiMax, ConsolorR Mode, DLNA,DP Connect Technology4.0sW (Play your game via your TV Full HD 3D wireless)

Inductive charging

250 GB Internal Memory

Multitask without lag

Ok, but here’s my question. Why do this on a separate gaming console? Why not put it all on a smartphone? That seems to be where things are going. What do you think? Would you want one of these?
Chengyuan Wei put together this little gadget that takes the ancient art of Origami and telephones and puts them into the same thing. How can this be?

First off, this isn’t a design that’s going to include touchscreens, buttons, or any of that fancy kind of stuff. Right now it’s just something that can work as an oldschool telephone handset, but it’s in a piece of cardboard. All you have to do to turn this flat thing into an ergonomic handset is squeeze the sides together gently. The breaks in the cardboard will bend and it’ll transform.

This isn’t going to change your life or anything, but it does demonstrate how far we’ve really come in making the things we need smaller and more convenient. Cool.

When opened halfway, you have kind of a widescreen palm top, mini computer. When unfolded completely, it turns into a full size, ultra thin notebook. Of course, there is the small issue of a seam running through the middle of the screen. It’s an interesting concept though.

When my son was born, and his vibrating bouncy seat started eating through AA batteries like jelly beans, I bought rechargeable batteries. But I found them kind of a pain. They didn’t always charge back up very well, and it took a long time to charge them. Therefore, the battery charger is now in a drawer, and while we still go through AAs like crazy for all those electronic toys, I just buy regular batteries. But if this concept design comes to light, I might just switch back. Continuance is a battery with a USB port right in the side.

As a bonus, and this might be the more popular feature, the batteries can provide a charge to USB-chargeable devices while on the go. Just plug your charger into the battery, then into the device, and get some extra power. The only drawback would be needing to charge them one by one, but I’m sure there is an easy solution to that. This is just a concept, but I’m encouraged to see them in actual packaging. Maybe it won’t be too long before this concept is a reality.

The battery is an IF Concept Design entrant for 2011.

At any given moment in a busy metropolitan area, there are lots of pedestrians waiting to cross the street. And of course, most of us could use more exercise. Designer Li Ming has decided to kill two birds with one stone with a new traffic light. The light features an animated figure doing some stretches and exercises.

Li Ming feels that the time waiting at busy intersections is wasted, and that if people are moving, or at the very least, entertained, while they are waiting, then they will be happier. Also, when it is time to cross the street, the animated figure looks both ways, encouraging people to look around before entering the intersection and avoid being smacked by a rouge red light runner. Our friendly animated companion walks “with” you across the street. The light also features a circle that gets fractionally smaller as time elapses to let you know how long you have to cross the street.

Have you ever walked into a house and had trouble figuring out what switch controlled which light? Designer, Taewon Hwang comes through with this delightfully intuitive light switch concept. He takes the floorplan of a house and turns it into the design for the light switch. One of these switches could make it easy to control every light in your home from one location, or you can install multiple switches for any configuration or purpose you can imagine.

You walk in the front door to your brand new house, you haven’t even slept here one night yet. The glow of your Taewon Hwang designed home-lighting-panel illuminates your entry with a soft glow. You toss your keys on the hook next to the door and press the three different buttons to illuminate your path to the kitchen. Taewon Hwang imagines an intuitive design for whole-house lighting systems able to be controlled from custom panels set anywhere in the house.

In a new concept from the SADI design school, the 360 Compact Folding mobile phone has multiple touch screens that are hinged together to simulate a tablet-like feel, or can be folded down for a device that is easier to hold. The phone would have a “standing mode” where it can be propped up for viewing the main screen, “protection mode” when it is closed, “multitasking mode” using all three screens, and “open mode” for only using the middle screen.

The design is by Baek Kil Hyun at Korean design school SADI. SADI has come out with some interesting designs, like this Book Printer we covered recently. Interestingly, the case on the concept phone reads “Samsung”.

What do you think, does this design have merit, or is it too cumbersome? No word on whether it will have 4G, or run on Android.

Word-a-day calendars are neat and all, but who the hell uses paper calendars? Oliver Shal has designed a brilliant, brain teasing calendar that’ll start your day with the confusion you need to excel. Imagine how relaxing it would be to wake up, and know you’ve either felt the smartest or the dumbest you’re going to feel that day already. The iQ alarm clock is so brilliant I’m certain its inventor is a robot.

He may also be a bit of a sociopath, because the mechanism by which this thing wakes you up is both ruthless and devastatingly effective. Upon waking you up, it rings “incessantly” until you answer from one to three brain teasers. The battery compartment is tamper-resistant. I hope they make it thrown-against-the-damn-wall resistant too.

This design is for AA batteries, but there is no reason that it couldn’t be used for AAAs like in all of those remote controls and kids toys we have around our houses. Here’s hoping this will get picked up by Energizer or Duracell, and we’ll see these in stores soon.

We’ve got a soft spot for conceptual design in our collective hearts here at SlashGear, and when a bit of industrial design comes along so very close to production that they only need a little nudge to get out of the door, we can’t resist. Especially when that design is brilliant to the level that this watch is. It appears to be analog until you realize what the hands are telling you – the hours, minutes, seconds, day, weather, and basically anything else you’d like, all of it in a cleverly fashionable design.

This is the ORBO watch series by Zach Starr Weiss, and it’s about 3 steps away from production. The image you see above is one of many, each of them rendered in some 3D illustration software or another. The display is so flat it’s going to have to be E-Ink, and the watch quality is going to have to be so high it can get back the money it’s put into the display.

We want this watch, so what you’re gonna have to do is find Zach, or just post in the comments below, tell Zach where to find someone who wants to produce his watches, and get this show on the road. I’ll take the white one you see above. Thanks!

The design as it is offers three branches from where green charging cables extend to juice up your devices. Three may not be enough for most folks, but this design concept is just a starting point. I imagine this could evolve into many different forms with possibly even modular add-on branches.

Perhaps a mini Christmas tree version bedecked with ornaments of iPhones?

With a new design from Michael Friebe, TVs may start looking a lot cooler. The Loewe Invisio television is completely transparent, allowing it to blend in with the existing design in the home. As Yanko Design stated: “This magnificent TV is not a big black blot in standby mode…It’s a clear, frameless glass surface that keeps the room in its “visually unaltered” state.”

According to Friebe, “As the first of its kind, the Loewe Invisio introduces technical innovation, combining conventional LCD and the latest TOLED display technology. This allows to create non-transparent / solid moving pictures with rich color reproduction and full contrast range from solid black to pristine white.”

The Leowe Invisio has been entered for a 2011 IF Concept Design award, an international competition for professionals in the areas of design, architecture, marketing and engineering.
No word yet on how much one of these will cost, but this may just be the future of TV.

The Motorola Atrix packs the dual-core power of a computer into a slender handset package. Moto made much of the laptop and TV docks, but both of those (admittedly nifty) peripheral products merely underscore the sad truth. On its own, the Atrix is a caged lion.

The 4″ display candy-bar form-factor has its limitations. There’s only so much you can do with a device like that before adding in peripherals. This new concept phone from designer Lin Jian Feng may be able to squeeze a big shot of additional power into the handset.

It has a medium-sized plastic bezel/body that detaches from the screen and slides out to reveal two halves of a keyboard, complete with a rolling-ball mouse and a left/right/middle mouse button key. The display will also be able to fold up out of the body, using it as a base to allow for more comfortable extended viewing.

MIDs are supposed to be a dead platform, but I’d buy the hell out of any smartphone that was a freaking Transformer. Every other gadget nerd raised on cartoons would be compelled to do the same. Lin Jian Feng is a genius.

If you’re at all familiar with the work of Mac Funamizu, you know he’s an industrial designer whose only limit is real-world application. He does not allow the technological limits of today have an effect on his work, therefor he does magnificent designs that might never exist. For this project, Mac found inspiration in a project by the name of WVIL Concept Camera, a camera with a similar aim but a much bigger package. The camera you’re about to peek at is made up of a single piece of glass, a clip-on tiny lens, and a metal rim. Of course there’d be some technological insides, but take a look and imagine something so very simple.

This camera goes by the name “Klipp Concept Camera” because of the nature of the lens, which indeed does clip onto the rim of the screen you’ll be using as both a viewfinder and a touchscreen. Then of course after each photo is taken, the image is wirelessly transmitted to your cloud, and all is well. How many years away from reality?

Well would you look at that, the perfect phone. All it took was a couple extra panels and there it was, all conceptualized and turned into a short ad for the world to see. This is a vision of a smartphone that takes the idea of flipping out an extra section (for a keyboard, for a speaker, etc.,) and took it a couple steps further. Designer Kristian Ulrich Larsen presents one lovely triangle.

I must remind you here again that this is a conceptual design, and is thusly not entirely built with the current state of technology in mind. Take a peek at the video below “What is being creative?” Starring we believe Kristian Larsen herself, taking this phone PAST the production stage and releasing it as a real product via a lovely two minute ad.

The screens are covered with Gorilla Glass, each of the screens is a flexible Super AMOLED (somehow both of these things are possible,) there’s steel mesh holding each screen to the next, LED colored lines run along several sides, and the rest is made of aluminum. Oh, and it’s an Android.

This is a design straight out of the concept books of both Peter Vardai and Tamas Fodor, both of whome have brought to life this magnificent machine for the world to get their TRON on in. It seems like this TRON fad has become a movement as the movie itself is leaving theaters yet concepts keep popping up. The goal of the designer of this project (Vardai) was to both reinforce the emotions people feel toward the Mercedes brand and bring their eyes up and out forward toward the future. Light strips on black sides will do that!

The shape of this vehicle, Vardai says, is based on the aerodynamics of an airplane, a streamlined set of sides for a smooth ride all the time. Black and silver are strewn throughout (though you can only see the black and the lights above) and lights, although the designer doesn’t mention them in his outline, are taken straight out of the newest installment in the Tron series: Legacy. Behold!

So we’ve got a concept here, and it’s branded LaCie, but that’s almost certainly just added in post-production by the designer André Silva. This is what he calls LaCie Float, a harddrive whose bulk not only appears to float above the ground because of its slightly smaller glass base, but has a strange feature on top of that, too. The entire top panel of this HDD (there’s an SSD version too) is a trackpad. You know what that means?

It means that this machine (though not all the details are worked out, obviously), take some of what otherwise seem to be crucial components out of the picture: all you need now is a monitor or screen of some sort and a way to attach it to the hard drive. From there, the harddrive could (with some modifications turning it into what’d be closer to what’s considered a computer) become a whole new all-in-one sort of machine.

Remember that this is a conceptual design and isn’t meant to be a complete idea yet. This is where great things are born, especially when the idea precedes the technology or the means of creating the project. Love it.

Modern cameras have evolved to the point where it’s almost silly to think you’ll have to take time to process the photos, even going through the trouble of transferring them to the computer with a wire is almost passe. But what’s this? A concept that dares you to not only take a step back, but take a step sideways and have FUN with the idea that you plug in to access? Take a peek at this “UCIM Camera” by Jung Eun Park, whose main function is sharing via USB sticks.

Ports and ports and ports! I’ve never seen a camera with so many ports – and they’re basically all USB! This camera aims to take photos and plant them directly unto USB sticks which can then be given directly to a set of friends so that they might all have the photos in their original format – for sharing on the internet, for printing, for anything. Simple and lovely. Plus it looks like candy.

This watch, a concept project by André Sheydin, works on your new-age thought process that tells you you don’t need one, not since you’ve got a phone in your pocket that gives you all that information just as easy as looking at your wrist. Why does it make you think twice about that? Because it’s gorgeous, works two ways, and is so far back on the concept train that it’s completely transparent and requires no power source.

That’s right, it’s so totally lovely. This watch changes color depending on the time of day (clear or black and inverted) and shows you the hours, minutes, seconds, days, and months, all on rings of tics that move according to the orbit they’ve got to take around your wrist. You know what that means? Six sets of tics flicking around your wrist all day long at different speeds. Splendid!

So you’ve got the need for some hard-copies of your papers to turn into your teachers for school, but you’d like to save space on the desk as well? Designer Byeong Min Choe has the answer you seek. This design is called “Document Extractor” and, looking like an iMac clone but with one giant difference, allows you to store a stack of paper in a tray behind it, and print, with the paper coming directly out the bottom. Not only that, the same place the paper comes out can also suck up, scanning single sheets of paper for you on the fly.

This screen will be entirely touch-based as well, allowing you to crop and print portions of your screen using some sort of print/scan application. Choe aims for this computer to be a big time saver as it might be able to not only cut out the amount of devices you need sitting on your desk, but also the amount of time you need to move back and forth from different applications for each device. Sounds sweet?

Apparently Yanko Design has found that while concept devices are cool, geeks will part with their money for watches that look like concepts that you can actually own. Lately there has been a rash of new watches on Yanko that you can purchase rather than the concepts we are used to seeing. Last week we spied the Avatar 1259B Watch that you could purchase for $159.

Yanko has another new watch that you can buy today called the Ever Increasing Watch. The watch was designed by the EleeNo group and it looks pretty cool. The watch reminds me of some sort of chart you might make in math class with dotted lines that move up a grid. The top blue line is for hours, the middle green line is for the tens of minutes, and the bottom red line is for single minutes.

Despite how complex the watch looks, it is actually very easy to read with the numbers printed right below the dotted lines for you. You can get the watch with a black or a silver band and face for $179.

The Avatar 1259C Watch is one of the strange watches that Yanko Design sells from time to time that you can actually buy.

The watch has a large metal face with 12 LED lights that indicate the hour on the small round face. The top line has nine LEDs and shows the minute increments in tens, and the bottom has five LEDs to show one-minute increments.

The watch has a fat black band and comes with a silver face and your choice of three LED colors including blue, red, and green. The stitching on the watchband matches the LED color. You can grab one up now for $159.

An interesting design concept showed up over on the Yanko site recently called the Touchtable.

The player features a large controller wheel that wraps around the screen of the PMP. The PMP would be able to control the pitch, timing and position of the track precisely by using the pressure and touch sensitive wheel.

Features include the ability to scratch samples over a track that is playing and it allows the user to mix tracks on the fly. The PMP is designed to look like a DJ turntable at 1:8 scale.
