We first heard about the XM SkyDock back in August when it was unveiled. The device was pegged at the time to have a launch date “this fall.” Since it’s already cold in many parts of the country and the leaves are falling, fall is officially here.

Sirius XM have announced their first radio dock for Apple’s iPhone and iPod touch, the XM SkyDock taking advantage of OS 3.0’s third-party peripheral integration to add a satellite radio tuner to the handheld and have it controlled by the new companion app.  The dock slots into a car’s power point, supporting the PMP with a flexible arm and custom cradle, and not only allows for listening to Sirius XM radio but for tagging tracks that you later want to buy on iTunes.

XM’s upcoming portable digital satellite radio receiver, the XMp3, has turned up on Best Buy, complete with pricing and more details about the PMP’s functionality.  Now confirmed as being made by Pioneer, the XMp3 will have access to up to 170 channels of XM satellite radio for $12.95 a month, together with MP3 and WMA playback.  Most interesting, however, is the XMp3’s ability to record up to five different channels simultaneously.

You would think that if someone was going to put out the money for a system like this, it would be a bit more practical than this particular system is. However this thing is loaded with all HD and SD goodness that you could possibly want from top to bottom.

Which is always good right? Apparently the deal is $6.95 per month for the first 50 channels of your choosing from one provider. From there it goes up to $14.95, but you get to choose up to 100 channels from either provider.

XM & Sirius mergerMergers, eh?  Some might say they’re bad news – big companies getting even bigger and squashing out the little guy – whilst others think they’re a good thing.  XM and Sirius are the latest big boys to do the dance of the frotting assets and they’ve pushed the company line that consumer-experience won’t be negatively impacted, most notably through price rises.

By highlighting a price freeze for the old package of services, they leave the impression that’s what consumers will pay for the new, combined offerings. But they haven’t really said what the new prices will be”
