Peter Molyneux only announced his departure from Microsoft last week, but already his position has been filled. The new head of Microsoft Game Studios Europe will be former Sony executive Phil Harrison. A formal announcement has been made by Microsoft, with Phil Spencer, corporate vice president at Microsoft Studios saying: "Phil is one of video gaming’s true visionaries, and his experience overseeing global studios and deep industry relationships make him the ideal person to lead our European efforts."

Xbox 720 ditching optical drive tip partners
Microsoft is warning partners that the next-gen Xbox will not include an optical drive, it’s reported, with downloads and an unspecified “interchangeable solid-state card storage” the only way to access games on the console. The decision comes with apparent confirmation of a 2013 launch of the console unofficially dubbed the “Xbox 720″, amid what sources tell MCV have been “the strictest NDA” encountered from the Xbox team.

Why Microsoft’s Kinect Is the Next Big Thing In Gaming
As I’ve said numerous times on these pages before, I’m deeply concerned by motion gaming. I think it’s holding the gaming business back and helps to make the space seem “gimmicky” — something I thought we were trying to move away from.
My issues with motion gaming have prompted me to turn my back on the Wii. In fact, I haven’t even seen my Wii in well over a year, since it’s been sitting in my closet with the rest of the obsolete and boring consoles I’ve bought over the years.

Xbox 720 tipped for fall 2013 with AMD 6000 series GPU
The next generation Microsoft Xbox 720 has been tipped to be shipping in late October or early November complete with six times the power in an AMD 6000 series GPU under the hood. There’ve been reports from several sources saying the same set of details, the most recent confirmation coming from IGN’s source close to the project. Specifically it appears that the Xbox 720 will be using the AMD Radeon HD 6670 working with support for DirectX11, 3D and 1080p HD output, and multidisplay output.

BioWare's Mass Effect 3 will use Microsoft's Kinect sensor bar not for motion- and gesture-control but for spoken voice commands that augment traditional gamepad play, speeding up the action by streamlining group tactics and flipping between weapons. Rather than pause the game, use the command wheel to decide non-player sidekick actions and then return to play, BioWare showed VentureBeat how commands like "carnage" can automatically trigger an attack on the opponents you've highlighted.
