If you are registered as an Apple Developer, you can now download the session videos from WWDC 2010 free of charge in both HD and SD formats. The videos cover all the session that were given at WWDC.

If you aren’t registered as a developer with Apple, you won’t be able to get the videos. I guess you could register as a developer just to get the videos. Registration is free for the developer program at Apple.

Having formed one of Steve Jobs’ nine key points about the new iPhone 4 this past Monday, Apple’s Retina Display technology has been making headlines again today over claims that they are “false marketing”. Wired spoke to Dr. Raymond Soneira, president of DisplayMate Technologies, who disagreed with Apple’s suggestion that Retina Display, exceeded the “300 pixels per inch” quoted for an average eye. Soneira – though agreeing that the iPhone 4′s display was likely to be the best smartphone screen on the market – converted 20/12 angular resolution to the linear resolution of a display, and came up with a figure of 477 pixels per inch at 12-inches, significantly higher than the iPhone 4′s 326ppi. Since there are some big claims all round here, SlashGear spoke to Dr. William H.A. Beaudot, Ph.D. of Kybervision Consulting, a visual sciences expert with 20 years experience in the research and computer vision field. Dr. Beaudot told us that part of the confusion here is from the mistaken belief that 20/20 vision is “perfect”, but that even at higher limits of visual acuity, Apple’s claims still hold water.

For instance, despite popular thinking, normal visual acuity is not in fact 20/20 – the ability to discriminate two points separated by one-sixtieth of a degree (or 1 arc minute) – but, at its maximum, around 20/16 to 20/12. In fact 20/20 is at the lower limit of regular acuity. Taking that lower limit and working out the visual angle of 1 arc minute from a foot away gets you a roughly 89 micrometer dot, or 286.5dpi.

Dr. Soneira bases his calculations on the angular resolution of the eye being 50 cycles per degree (cpd), which in more familiar terms is 20/12; Dr Beaudot pointed out to us that this is pretty much the maximum theoretical resolution of the human eye. In terms of range, 20/20 vision is equivalent to 30 cpd. Based on holding your phone at the average distance – that is, around 18-inches away from your face – at 50 cpd the Retina Display’s 326ppi matches the visual acuity of the 20/12 eye. Dr Beaudot told us that Apple’s claims about Retina Display basically remain valid – in fact get stronger – for any viewing distances beyond 10-inches (and limited to a reasonable near reading distance, around 20-inches or arm-length).

We asked Dr. Beaudot (who produced retina models used to make silicon retinas for computer vision and prosthetics, among other things) whether Retina Display was really as close to human retina resolution as Apple suggest, and he told us that “this is the closest thing ever done in display technology that matches [the eye's resolution].” That resolution is naturally limited by the spacing between photoreceptors in the retina at its densest point, the fovea at the center, which can reach at most 60 cpd; the iPhone 4′s maximum 50 cpd at 18-inches is not far off that theoretical limit of the “perfect” eye.

Both experts agree that the iPhone 4′s display delivers the best visuals in a mobile device to-date; these new figures suggest you’d not just need 20/20 but also truly “perfect” vision to differentiate pixels in normal use. Every iPhone may come with 960 x 640 resolution, but every eye is different. In the end, the proof of the pudding is in the iPhone 4 experience; something we can ourselves confirm is incredibly impressive from our hands-on earlier this week.

At the Apple worldwide developer’s conference, Steve Jobs talked about a lot of numbers at onstage. Apple talked about the 29% US market share of the smart phone market that the iPhone has achieved. Apple discussed the 58% market share of mobile Web browsing that it now has. Apple even talked about their 22% marketshare in e-books. The most important number, however, that Apple talked about so was 100 million. That’s how many iOS devices are in the market as of this month. That’s significant and it shows what Apple’s long-term platform play is all about. Hint, it’s no longer about the personal computer, at least the personal computer as we know it.

The very iOS name is significant. Think about it. When the iPhone was introduced Apple pointed out that this was just another iteration of OS X optimized for a phone. Over time, it became known as the iPhone OS and as of WWDC it now has name of its own. That’s because iOS is a platform play and I believe this is the future that Apple is betting on. Betting on big time. In a world of connected devices and screens, phones are only one part of the equation.

Sure, Apple has 29% of the US smartphone market and that’s not trivial and it is important. While no vendor is likely to achieve the dominant position in the smartphone space that Microsoft achieved with their desktop PC operating system, Apple has shown that it doesn’t need to do that. If Apple can maintain a 30 to 40% market share in the phone business and at the same time maintain a strong position in the tablet business and of course the hand-held pocket-sized tablet that we call the iPod touch, Apple can successfully leverage iOS as the next-generation platform for connected devices. With Apple, it’s not about three screens and a cloud but rather multiple screens and connected services within an applications ecosystem that’s leveraged across each device.

At the D8 conference, Steve Jobs compared the PC to a truck. A useful vehicle for sure, but one that fewer and fewer people need each year even though there’s still a market for them. It appears Apple’s goal is to make the PC something they’ll continue to build for those who need them but over time attempt to shift the market away from both Macintosh and Mac OS as well as Windows and Windows PCs as well. I note that this years developer’s conference was the first one that I can recall where was no mention of Mac OS at all. Not a single slide, not a single update on the OS or Mac market. Nothing at all at the keynote. That wasn’t an accident. (in the past, even when OS X was off WWDC from a dev cycle, it still received pretty prominent exposure). This year, it’s all been about was all about iOS and iOS devices and the developer story behind them.

Apple iPhone 4 hands-on:

While I normally don’t speculate on Apple products, one can actually get a pretty good idea where Apple is moving. We’ve heard rumors over the last few weeks of the new version of Apple TV built upon iOS. That’s looking more and more like a likely next product and I expect it could be introduced as early as next fall at the annual iPod refresh. Given the goal of a connected, next generation device platform it’s also easy to understand why Apple might view Google as a greater competitive threat than old rival Microsoft.

While Microsoft talks about multiple connected screens, Windows is a PC platform and Windows Phone a smartphone platform. There’s no unified model, architecture or evangelism to tie those products and services together just yet. Google on the other hand has articulated a similar strategy for Android, a platform for phones, tablets, TVs, netbooks and every other non-PC device. Expect to see more clashes in the months ahead between Cupertino and Mountain View and more companies to look to Microsoft as the new Switzerland for alliances and partnerships (Apple in fact did announce a Microsoft partnership at WWDC and the Bing search engine is now an option on iOS and Safari)

I think we’re seeing a bold strategy in play. A recognition that the PC vs. Mac is a battle for the last century not this one. By marginalizing the personal computer, including Macintosh, Apple sets the stage for where the real battle of the future is and what life might look like in a post-PC world.

I thought there would be far more rumors leading up to Apple’s World Wide Developer’s Conference. After all, the big story had already been blown, which left a lot of room open for speculation. Besides, a number of significant Apple products are due for an update, right?

Macrumors runs an Apple buyer’s guide where they track the lifecycle of Apple’s key products. A few of Apple’s products haven’t been updated in a long time, longer than their usual average. But some are approaching record period of stagnation.

M.I.A.: The Mac Pro, Apple’s headless desktop machine, hasn’t been updated in 462 days. That’s a half year longer than its average, and the longest period the Pro machine has gone without an update since, well, the last update. From 2002 on, the machine was updated every six months or so; now it’s been well over a year, with only 2 updates in the last 3 years.

Of course this is a sign of the changing marketplace. Desktops are less popular than laptops. Professional desktops are much less popular than less expensive consumer machines, especially a machine like the iconic iMac. Besides, Apple has quite a few other meals on its plate. But if the Mac Pro was going to updated anywhere, it should be at the WWDC, the best spot to reach developers, right?

That’s not how Apple does things these days. It was sad to see Apple pull out of the venerable Macworld conferences, effectively killing the interest of most journalists in IDG’s trade show. Apple doesn’t even need a trade show keynote, as the company hosts numerous events in San Francisco every year to announce new products. The journalists and analysts will show up. Even if the most exciting product is a refreshed iPod nano with a video camera, we’ll show up, without even knowing what we’re about to see.

Unless there’s a major redesign for the Mac Pro case, Apple will launch the next model with a press release. With a professional unit like this, the most exciting stuff is happening on the inside. USB 3.0, new system bus architectures, better graphics, improved power management and cooling, none of these things are especially photogenic, so Apple can launch them with an e-mail and a new page on its home Web site.

I don’t think we’ve seen the end of the Mac Pro or the headless desktop, but I do think we’ve seen the end of the Mac Pro making a keynote appearance.

M.I.A.: The MacBook Air was last updated a year ago. The Air is a strange bird. Full disclosure: I bought a first generation Air when it was released. I needed to replace a dead laptop. A netbook wasn’t powerful enough for the light Photoshop and video editing tasks I perform, but I was also going to be traveling more. The Air was a great fit. After about seven months, I realized it wasn’t powerful enough for me to be productive, but I still use it often.

The Air has a nebulous market. It’s much too expensive to be an extravagant impulse buy, like many netbooks. It’s more powerful than an iPad by far, but it’s also the least powerful computer running Apple’s Mac OS X. Even the Mac Mini is faster. With the economy in the tank, it would be a tough time to introduce an entirely new redesign for the Air. It wouldn’t generate the momentum needed for the Air to take off. Apple likes to release a product and then, a few months or even weeks later, brag about sales results. That wouldn’t happen with a new MacBook Air.

The MacBook Air will eventually get a processor boost. I’d like to think it will get an Intel Core i3 chip, but I’d bet Apple will stick with the lower power Core 2 Duo’s for a while and milk the battery life stats for all their worth. It won’t be worth a keynote appearance except as a sideshow. Again, Apple could launch this product with a press release and be done with it.

M.I.A.: The Apple TV hasn’t been updated in . . . wait, has it ever been updated? There was a minor interface update. There was a slight storage boost. Other than that, nothing. The Apple TV is the worst Apple product I’ve ever owned, and I’m embarrassed that I bought one. It’s buggy and unreliable, it clogs my network, and I’ve never settled in for a nice Saturday night watching a movie on the Apple TV that didn’t end with cursing and multiple restarts.

Steve Jobs hates television. The Apple TV has always been, as Jobs said, a hobby, and I wonder who whined and cried until Jobs agreed to release this little white gremlin. Steve Jobs wants to create products that are active and engaging, not passive and sedentary. The iPod is for jogging and traveling. That’s why it has Nike software built in. The iMac is about creativity, that’s why it comes with photo, video and music making software, and nothing to help watch television.

Every good Windows machine ships with a solid TV tool on board in Windows Media Center. You can watch and record TV on your Windows machine, if you can figure out how to attach your coaxial cable. On the Mac, there are a few third party options, and the Apple TV even has an HDMI output, but Apple’s TV strategy has been a confused mess.

That’s why so many people fell for the recent Apple TV rumor, that it would become an iPhone-sized device running iPhone OS (now iOS4). Preposterous. First of all, there’s the storage size limits. There’s the problem of cannibalizing iPod touch sales, which are significant, even among Apple’s iPod / iPhone families.

Mostly, though, Steve Jobs hates TV, and the last thing he wants is to sell you a device that lets you watch more TV, then take it to your friends house so they can share in the TV watching experience. Steve Jobs doesn’t want your butt on a couch unless your hands are also moving. He certainly doesn’t want you to proselytize sedentary TV viewing with a device that makes it more portable. Not to mention the sheer inelegance of having to find the inputs on every TV you want to connect to such a device.

The Apple TV never made much sense for Apple, anyway. Apple likes to enter an established product category and make a device that has fewer features, but performs them in the most elegant way possible. There were already a few good TV boxes on the market, but it wasn’t established, and by the time Apple TV hit the scene, the DVR market was already being strangled by cable providers roping customers in with cheap, built-in software.

When the FCC resolves these silly CableCard issues and it’s just as easy for customers to buy a third party product as it is to use their existing cable box, Apple might do more with the Apple TV. Until then, I expect some minor interface polish, maybe a storage bump, ad nauseum.

M.I.A.: That weird Magic Trackpad accessory. Of all the strange rumors I’ve heard leading up to an Apple event, this one caught me the most off guard. It’s a completely new product for Apple, and very few manufacturers promote trackpad accessories. After all, a desktop comes with a mouse, and a laptop comes with a trackpad. But of all the rumors I heard, this one made the most sense and would have had the greatest effect.

Apple has a serious fragmentation problem that is holding back the potential of its laptop line. Multitouch is a great technology, but only laptops support it. Adobe went through multiple generations of Photoshop before it supported multi-touch, which is just ridiculous because multitouch gestures make the most sense on the programs in Adobe’s Creative Suite. Multitouch would be great in any number of apps, from productivity software like Excel to games to graphics software and so on.

Imagine if Apple provided a trackpad with every iMac? Not instead of a mouse, but separate from it. Perhaps it would confuse some users, but developers might take notice and start developing better multitouch gesture support into their apps. Thus, the best place to launch such a peripheral, and to give one away to every person in the audience, would have been the World Wide Developer’s Conference.

Sure, Apple’s desktop share is tiny compared to much larger, enterprise-oriented rivals, but its developers are a vocal and influential group. Multitouch support will be everywhere eventually. Apple just missed an opportunity to give the tech a push.

Now here’s a surprise. After filling the WWDC 2010 keynote with naught but iPhone 4 goodness, Apple has slipped out Safari 5, the latest version of their desktop browser. Packing a claimed 30-percent performance boost over Safari 4, the new version is also apparently three percent faster than Chrome 5.0 and over twice as fast as Firefox 3.6. Of course, it’s still a free download, and is available both for Mac and Windows machines.

There’s no shortage of HTML5 goodness, either, just as we’ve heard in rumors leading up to the new browser’s release. Apple have squeezed in HTML5 Geolocation, HTML5 sectioning elements, HTML5 draggable attribute, HTML5 forms validation, HTML5 Ruby, HTML5 AJAX History, EventSource and WebSocket, together with a new, free Safari Developer Program. That uses standard web technologies like HTML5, CSS3 and JavaScript to create new extensions, and there’s a dedicated Extension Builder in which each runs, sandboxed and with a signed digital Apple signature.

Most interesting to end users, perhaps, is the new Safari Reader mode which, at the tap of a button, slices out any extraneous information on the page and leaves just the core text. Safari 5 will be available for download at apple.com/safari

Press Release:

Apple Releases Safari 5

SAN FRANCISCO, June 7 /PRNewswire-FirstCall/ — Apple® today released Safari® 5, the latest version of the world’s fastest and most innovative web browser, featuring the new Safari Reader for reading articles on the web without distraction, a 30 percent performance increase over Safari 4,* and the ability to choose Google, Yahoo! or Bing as the search service powering Safari’s search field. Available for both Mac® and Windows, Safari 5 includes improved developer tools and supports more than a dozen new HTML5 technologies that allow web developers to create rich, dynamic websites. With Safari 5, developers can now create secure Safari Extensions to customize and enhance the browsing experience.

“Safari continues to lead the pack in performance, innovation and standards support,” said Philip Schiller, Apple’s senior vice president of Worldwide Product Marketing. “Safari now runs on over 200 million devices worldwide and its open source WebKit engine runs on over 500 million devices.”

Safari Reader makes it easy to read single and multipage articles on the web by presenting them in a new, scrollable view without any additional content or clutter. When Safari 5 detects an article, users can click on the Reader icon in the Smart Address Field to display the entire article for clear, uninterrupted reading with options to enlarge, print or send via email.

Powered by the Nitro JavaScript engine, Safari 5 on the Mac runs JavaScript 30 percent faster than Safari 4, three percent faster than Chrome 5.0, and over twice as fast as Firefox 3.6.* Safari 5 loads new webpages faster using Domain Name System (DNS) prefetching, and improves the caching of previously viewed pages to return to them more quickly.

Safari 5 adds more than a dozen powerful HTML5 features that allow web developers to create media-rich experiences, including full screen playback and closed captions for HTML5 video. Other new HTML5 features in Safari 5 include HTML5 Geolocation, HTML5 sectioning elements, HTML5 draggable attribute, HTML5 forms validation, HTML5 Ruby, HTML5 AJAX History, EventSource and WebSocket.

The new, free Safari Developer Program allows developers to customize and enhance Safari 5 with extensions based on standard web technologies like HTML5, CSS3 and JavaScript. The Extension Builder, new in Safari 5, simplifies the development, installation and packaging of extensions. For enhanced security and stability, Safari Extensions are sandboxed, signed with a digital certificate from Apple and run solely in the browser.

Pricing & Availability

Safari 5 is available for both Mac OS® X and Windows as a free download at www.apple.com/safari. Safari 5 for Mac OS X requires Mac OS X Leopard 10.5.8 or Mac OS X Snow Leopard® 10.6.2 or later. Safari 5 for Windows requires Windows XP SP2, Windows Vista or Windows 7, a minimum 256MB of memory and a system with at least a 500 MHz Intel Pentium processor. Full system requirements and more information on Safari 5 can be found at www.apple.com/safari. The Safari Developer Program is free to join at developer.apple.com/programs/safari.

*Performance will vary based on system configuration, network connection and other factors. All testing conducted by Apple in May 2010 on an iMac® 3.06 GHz Intel Core 2 Duo system running Mac OS X 10.6.3, with 4GB of RAM. JavaScript benchmark based on the SunSpider 0.9.1 JavaScript Performance test.

Slimmer, brighter, more powerful and apparently the product of 18 months development: the Apple iPhone 4 certainly is something. The WWDC 2010 opening keynote is over, and we’ve just been back to check out the new Apple smartphone. Set to debut on June 24th – and up for preorder from June 15th – the Jobs hyperbole and press shots don’t do the iPhone 4 justice in your hand. Whether you’re an Apple fan or not, you have to give them credit for creating a very slick device.

More first impressions and hands-on gallery and videos after the cut

At just only 9.3mm thick, we already know it’s 24-percent thinner than the iPhone 3GS. Still, the squared off edges means it doesn’t feel quite as slender as you might imagine. Happily the incredible IPS screen – using Apple’s new Retina Display 960 x 640 technology – more than makes up for it. Icons are smooth, crisp and clean, and text is incredibly precise. We browsed through a few webpages and were blown away by how amazingly readable they were even at zoomed-out levels. All of a sudden the limitation is your eyesight not the resolution of the phone.

As for iMovie for iPhone, we had a brief play and shuffled some clips and photos around, and it’s as intuitive as you’d expect being so similar to the desktop version (watch hands-on video). The Apple A4 processor doesn’t seem to feel the strain, either; pages whip past, the time line changes scale with a simple pinch, and there’s no laggardly rendering. We’ll have to see how it copes with significantly longer clips when we get our review unit, but it’s already blown rival on-device editing systems out of the water.

iOS 4 is a great balance of the familiar and the new, and the multitasking UI works well. Still, today felt like a hardware showcase – Apple demonstrating their expertise in putting together industry-leading hardware – and the iPhone 4 certainly epitomizes that. Considering the price we reckon they’ve got a winner on their hands, though we’ll save the conclusive judgments until our review. Until then, enjoy our HUGE hands-on gallery and video!

Quadband GSM, Steve Jobs said, and you could hear the hiss of excitement as eager T-Mobile USA customers suddenly wondered if they’d be able to take advantage of the iPhone 4. Unfortunately, a quick glance at the freshly posted spec sheet confirms their hopes are in vain: the iPhone 4 supports 850, 900, 1900 and 2100 MHz UMTS/HSDPA/HSUPA, not the 1700/2100 T-Mobile USA requires.

What does this mean? Basically, when the first iPhone 4 unlock hack is released – and we don’t expect it to take long after the smartphone hits shelves on June 24th – T-Mobile USA subscribers will still only be able to take advantage of quadband GSM/EDGE, just like on the current, triband iPhone 3GS.

Apple once again has built and delivered the most advanced mobile device in the market. Steve Jobs, during his interview at the Wall St. Journal conference last week, mentioned that his companies passion was to build the best products around and in this analyst’s opinion they have again set the bar by which other mobile phones will be judged.

This doesn’t mean that other competitors won’t catch up or include key innovations of their own, however for the time being the iPhone 4 and the newly named iOS4 is packed with innovation useful for everyday consumers and tech enthusiasts alike.
It may be easy for many people within the press – including the Apple naysayers – to look at today’s announcements and complain that there was anything truly innovative announced. Statements like these miss the broader picture of not only what Apple is doing but what Apple is doing for the technology industry at large. That being said, I want to highlight several things that require a deeper look.

Battery Life

Creating devices that don’t need to be recharged every few hours to every few days has always been a challenge for the industry. As manufacturers create more sophisticated technology onlookers are always skeptical of the affect on battery life these new innovations will have. This was true of many of the first few generations of iPhone, it’s true of many of the latest Android devices and many others.

Apple, however, with several of it’s latest product releases has made an all-hands-on-deck effort to solve this problem and release products with unparalleled battery life. The iPad for example is one of those products that when used one marvels at how long the battery goes. The latest MacBook Pro’s with all the latest silicon is still capable of 8 hours or more of computing.

With the iPhone 4, Apple has once again shown their commitment to delivering industry leading battery life in a mobile device. This is done thanks to the combination of the powerful yet efficient A4 processor and streamlined software enhancements in the new iOS.

Capture

The 5-megapixel optics introduced in the new iPhone hardware are an improvement over previous generations however there are still devices on the market with high resolution cameras. The newly supported ability to capture 720p HD video ranks with the more capable Android devices on the market but the real difference is the new iMovie application for the iPhone.

Again, at lasts week’s Wall St Journal conference Steve Jobs pointed out that he saw other devices than just the traditional PC becoming more then just consumption devices but having elements of productivity. He is proving this out with the iMovie mobile application that will give consumers the ability to now create home movies with their iPhone and instantly share those creations with friends and family. This has the potential to revolutionize how we think about creating home movies. This will also contribute greatly to the massive amount of digital data creation we are anticipating over the next five years.

The other interesting element is how iMovie was written to take advantage of touch computing, something I wrote about a few months ago. Apple has demonstrated again the way touch adds a unique element to the creation and creativity process by making it more intuitive. Again, demonstrating how touch computing may very well be how current and future generations create content in the years to come.

Getting some FaceTime

And there’s one more thing. If we weren’t already convinced that today’s keynote was 100-percent about the iPhone the “one more thing” sealed the deal. I know many people who were speculating it would be about Apple TV, or about a hardware update for the iPad. Instead Steve introduced a new application called “FaceTime” that utilizes a new camera placed on the front of the new iPhone. The purpose of this is obvious: video conferencing.

Yes other parts of the world like Korea, Japan and other parts of Asia are already doing this; Europe too. They have much faster pipes and cell infrastructure then we do, which is why Apple is leading the way in laying the groundwork for this technology in the US.

Apple FaceTime on iPhone 4:

          flashvars="config=http://asset.slashgear.tv/sgtv.php?vkey=27bdd4ebbebcb2ba10a0"
   />

At first, however, FaceTime will only work iPhone 4 to iPhone 4 and, for 2010 at least, only over WiFi not 3G; still, Apple is releasing a new set of standards that will allow for cross-platform video conferencing on mobile devices. Developers can also take advantage of this new set of standards and APIs to take advantage of this new front facing camera and can utilize this new hardware addition in creative ways. The only real bummer out of the gate is FaceTime’s limitation to WiFi, but we hope that over time AT&T or other carriers that the quadband GSM iPhone 4 may support can take advantage of this technology over the air.

Hnads-on with FaceTime:

Video conferencing and Tele-Presence has been a big buzz word around the industry the past year. Consumers have been slow to adopt many of these technologies but it seems that Apple is once again in a position to assist in bringing consumer video conferencing to the mainstream.

I believe the experience and Face Time application will be one of the primary innovations included in this phone that will help drive sales of this new device. Many of the innovations will challenge the rest of the industry to make products that meet a range of consumer demand and consumers will benefit. Most of all, I’m very excited to see how developers take advantage of this new hardware and what new consumer experiences develop because of it.

Steve Jobs, still standing on the stage at WWDC 2010 on Monday, finally unveiled the pricing for the next member of the iPhone family. Prices, whether you’re surprised or not, aren’t all that different than what we’ve come to expect from Apple, working together with AT&T, and there’s two models to choose from this time around.

You can pick up the 16GB model, in either white or black, for a paltry $199. As for the 32GB model, you’ll have to put down $299 to get your hands on it. Of course, those prices are with a new, two-year agreement, so keep that in mind, too. AT&T is changing things around to make sure that current iPhone owners can get their hands on the new model, and if you’re contract is set to end in 2010, some time in that year, then you’re automatically eligible for the new model.

The device will be on sale on June 24th, and it will be up for pre-order starting June 15th. As we’ve said in the past, the iPhone 3G is officially retired, and right now the iPhone 3GS, in its 8GB capacity, will only be $99. The iPhone 4 is going to launch in five countries: United States, France, Germany, the UK, and Japan. After that, and by the end of September 2010, the new iPhone will be in 88 countries.

It will feature new accessories, like a dock which will cost you $29.99.

But the most important part: iOS4 will be hitting the iPhone 3GS and iPhone 3G on June 21st. Unfortunately, if you’re on the iPhone 3G, you won’t be getting the full suite of updates. The update will be free to those owners, too. The iPod Touch, aside from the first iteration, will also get the update to iOS4 for free.

There’s a front-facing camera on the iPhone 4, and pretty much everyone assumed that with a front-facing camera, that means you have to have video calling. Apparently Apple agreed with all of you, because sure enough, it’s coming to the next version of the iPhone.

There’s a bit of a snag, though. While everyone would probably love to run around their city, using that AT&T 3G they know and love, to make all those video calls, Steve Jobs announced that the calls will be only made over WiFi for now. You can access a video call, from iPhone 4 to iPhone 4 that is, even from a regular on the fly, though, so that’s definitely interesting.

It features “amazing video and audio quality,” and that probably goes a long way due to the WiFi connection. It’s apparently WiFi-only in 2010, and the carriers “need to do some work” before it can get anywhere else. We imagine that’s something AT&T would want to work on, pretty quickly, as it’s one of the features that many people out there want, and want it right now.

When iPhone OS 4 (or should we say iOS4) was shown off a few months back, we had a pretty good demonstration of how Apple’s new, revolutionary mobile advertisement platform was going to work. But, it wouldn’t be an Apple keynote if we didn’t get to see it in action again. Of course, there’s a few more pieces of information in there that are worthy of mention, but we all know Steve Jobs just wanted to show it off again.

Apple are expecting to take 48% of the whole mobile advertising market, and wants developers to try it out. He apparently thinks that it will be a great success for them, too. And, considering the platform, and how many devices it would be on, that’s probably pretty accurate. Apparently they’ve $60m committed for iAds from advertisers in the second half of the year.

As for partners, here’s who you’re looking at (so far): Nissan, Citi, Unileve, AT&T, Chanel, GE, Liberty Mutual, State Farm, Geico, Cambells, Sears, JC Penny, Target, Best Buy, Direct TV, TBS and Disney all onboard! Now, keep in mind that this is all still breaking, so stay tuned to the liveblog to keep updated as it happens. And, we’ll have a video demonstration of iAds soon enough, so stay tuned for that, too.

Press Release:

Apple to Debut iAds on July 1

Over $60 Million in 2010 Commitments from Leading Global Brands

SAN FRANCISCO, June 7 /PRNewswire-FirstCall/ — Apple® today announced it will debut its iAd mobile advertising network on July 1 on iPhone® and iPod touch® devices running its iOS 4 software platform. iAds combine the emotion of TV advertising with the interactivity of Internet advertising, giving advertisers a dynamic and powerful new way to bring motion and emotion to mobile users. iAd will kick off with mobile ad campaigns from leading global brands including AT&T, Best Buy, Campbell Soup Company, Chanel, Citi, DirecTV, GEICO, GE, JCPenney, Liberty Mutual Group, Nissan, Sears, State Farm, Target, Turner Broadcasting System, Unilever and The Walt Disney Studios. Apple has iAd commitments for 2010 totaling over $60 million, which represents almost 50 percent of the total forecasted US mobile ad spending for the second half of 2010.*

“iAd offers advertisers the emotion of TV with the interactivity of the web, and offers users a new way to explore ads without being hijacked out of their favorite apps,” said Steve Jobs, Apple’s CEO. “iAds will reach millions of iPhone and iPod touch users–a highly desirable demographic for advertisers–and provide developers a new way to earn money so they can continue developing free and low cost applications.”

“iAd will allow Citi to reach millions of people on their iPhone and iPod touch,” said Lisa Caputo, executive vice president and CMO, Citigroup. “iAd gives us a remarkable level of creativity for creating ads to connect with our current and future customers in a more interactive style than ever before.”

“iAd is going to revolutionize mobile advertising,” said Rob Master, North American media director, Unilever. “With iAd, we’ve been able to create some of our most powerful and compelling ads ever. iAd is the perfect mobile format to reach and engage with our customers.”

iAd, which is built into iOS 4, allows users to stay within their app while engaging with the ad, even while watching a video, playing a game or using in-ad purchase to download an app or buy iTunes® content.

Developers who join the iAd Network can easily incorporate a variety of advertising formats into their apps. Apple will sell and serve the ads, and developers will receive an industry-standard 60 percent of the iAd Network revenue, which is paid via iTunes Connect.

iAds require iOS 4, which will be a free software update via iTunes 9.2 or later for iPhone and iPod touch customers. iOS 4 will work with iPhone 3G, iPhone 3GS, iPhone 4, and second and third generation iPod touch (late 2009 models with 32GB or 64GB).

*Percent of forecast based on an annual run rate basis, starting on July 1. US Mobile Display Advertising forecast from the report by JP Morgan, “Nothing But Net–2010 Internet Investment Guide,” January 3, 2010.

Apple ignited the personal computer revolution with the Apple II, then reinvented the personal computer with the Macintosh. Apple continues to lead the industry with its award-winning computers, OS X operating system, and iLife, iWork and professional applications. Apple leads the digital music revolution with its iPods and iTunes online store, has reinvented the mobile phone with its revolutionary iPhone and App Store, and has recently introduced its magical iPad which is defining the future of mobile media and computing devices.

iPhone OS must have been too long to say in general conversation, because Apple have gone ahead and changed the name of one of their most defining pieces of technology. iPhone OS will now, and forever be known as iOS, which is definitely a lot easier to say. Of course, that means that with the introduction of iOS 4, the name will be forever official.

There are upwards of 1,500 new features being released with iOS 4. Things like Folders, Unified Inbox, and Multitasking (which we’ve seen before) are coming along for the ride. As Steve Jobs put it, they weren’t the first on the market with multitasking, but they took the time to make sure that it is done right. If you don’t, then you kill your battery, and that’s just not a good user experience.

The other new features include Retina Integration with all of the applications — developers don’t have to do anything to make it work. The enhanced camera, obviously, as well as plenty more. Stay tuned with the liveblog, because it doesn’t look like Jobs is ready to quit any time soon.

Update: iPhone 3G, 3GS and iPod touch 2G+ owners will be able to install iOS4 from June 21st

The hits just keep on coming from Apple, as Steve Jobs continues to command the stage at WWDC 2010. While the iPhone 4 was probably the biggest (even if most expected) piece of news announced today, another heavy hitter just hit the stage. The iPHone 4′s camera can take HD video up to 720p, at 30fps, but what good is that if you can’t edit those movies from your phone, right? That’s where iMovie for iPhone comes in, ladies and gentlemen.

iMovie for the iPhone is written specifically for the smaller, mobile device. There’s a big preview screen that goes on top of what you’re working on, and a timeline underneath. It looks a lot like iMovie for Mac, which isn’t surprising at all. You can pinch to alter the timeline scale at your will, and you can also record video directly into the iMovie app, or you can simply import recorded videos whenever you want.

You can apply themes, toggle music on and off, and use your iPod library as your music selection. You can export video in 360p, 520p, or 720p HD. iMovie will be $4.99 in the App Store. “If we approve it!” announced Jobs when he walked back on stage.

Keep up with the live coverage at our liveblog: http://live.slasghear.com. It’s still coming!

Well, that didn’t take long at all. Steve Jobs has come out on stage at this year’s WWDC to blow the socks off everybody out there, and while he believes that the iPhone 4 is, “Beyond a doubt the most precise thing, the most beautiful thing we’ve ever made,” we’ll have to wait and see it in our hands (hopefully today) before we can make a final judgment. But, it’s announced!

External controls include volume up/down, mute, there’s a front facing camera, micro-SIM, camera with LED flash, microphone on the bottom with the 30-pin Dock Connector and speaker. On top is the headphone jack and a second microphone for noise cancellation, plus the power button. It’s 9.3mm thick – that’s 24% thinner than the iPhone 3GS and the thinnest smartphone on the planet. Glass front and back; stainless steel edging. “Closest kin is an old Leica camera.”

“This is the iPhone 4.”

And with that, we’ve got the next iteration of the iPhone family of devices. Stay tuned, as more is coming!

http://live.slashgear.com for all the updated news as it breaks!

Press Release:

SAN FRANCISCO, June 7 /PRNewswire-FirstCall/ — Apple® today presented the new iPhone® 4 featuring FaceTime, which makes the dream of video calling a reality, and Apple’s stunning new Retina display, the highest resolution display ever built into a phone, resulting in super crisp text, images and video. In addition, iPhone 4 features a 5 megapixel camera with LED flash, HD video recording, Apple’s A4 processor, a 3-axis gyro and up to 40 percent longer talk time–in a beautiful all-new design of glass and stainless steel that is the thinnest smartphone in the world. iPhone 4 comes with iOS 4, the newest version of the world’s most advanced mobile operating system, which includes over 100 new features and 1500 new APIs for developers. iOS 4 features Multitasking, Folders, enhanced Mail, deeper Enterprise support and Apple’s new iAd mobile advertising platform. iPhone 4 will be available in the US, UK, France, Germany and Japan on June 24, starting in the US at just $199 for qualified buyers with a two year contract.*

“iPhone 4 is the biggest leap since the original iPhone,” said Steve Jobs, Apple’s CEO. “FaceTime video calling sets a new standard for mobile communication, and our new Retina display is the highest resolution display ever in a phone, with text looking like it does on a fine printed page. We have been dreaming about both of these breakthroughs for decades.”

FaceTime is as mobile as your phone, so you can see your loved ones and friends anywhere there is Wi-Fi. Using FaceTime is as easy as making a regular voice call, with no set-up required, and you can instantly switch to the rear camera to show others what you are seeing with just a tap.

Apple’s stunning 3.5 inch Retina display has 960 x 640 pixels–four times as many pixels as the iPhone 3GS and 78 percent of the pixels on an iPad(TM). The resulting 326 pixels per inch is so dense that the human eye is unable to distinguish individual pixels when the phone is held at a normal distance, making text, images and video look sharper, smoother and more realistic than ever before on an electronic display.

iPhone 4 is the thinnest smartphone ever–9.3 millimeters–with an all-new design and build quality like no other mobile device. The front and back are made of aluminosilcate glass, chemically strengthened to be 30 times harder than plastic, more scratch resistant and more durable than ever. The front and back glass have an oil-resistant coating that helps keep it clean, and encircling iPhone 4 is a highly finished stainless steel band made of a custom alloy that is forged to be five times stronger than standard steel.

iPhone 4 features a new 5 megapixel autofocus camera with a 5x digital zoom, a backside illuminated sensor and built-in LED flash that allows you to take amazing pictures even in low light and dark environments. iPhone 4 lets you record and edit incredible HD video and the popular tap to focus feature now works while recording video. You can use the iPhone 4′s LED flash for both still photography and video recording. The new iMovie® app for iPhone lets you combine movie clips, add dynamic transitions and themes and include photos and music, and users can buy it for just $4.99 through the App Store right on their phone.

iPhone 4 is the best mobile device ever for games and entertainment, with access to tens of thousands of games and entertainment apps on the revolutionary App Store. Every iPhone 4 has a built-in 3-axis gyro that when combined with the accelerometer provides 6-axis motion sensing such as up and down, side to side, forward and backward and pitch and roll, making it perfect for gaming. Developers can access the gyro using the new CoreMotion API to make games and other apps that go well beyond what other mobile devices offer.

iPhone 4 comes with iOS 4, the newest version of the world’s most advanced mobile operating system. With over 100 new features, it includes Multitasking, Folders, enhanced Mail, deeper Enterprise support and Apple’s new iAd mobile advertising platform. With Multitasking, users can now instantly switch between any of their apps while preserving battery life. With Folders, users can easily organize their apps into collections by simply dragging one app on top of another. A folder is automatically created and named based on the category of apps selected. Users can change the name of any folder at any time. In addition, users can now customize their lock and home screens with an array of supplied wallpapers or with any of the photos on their phone.

The new iBooks® app will be available for iPhone 4 as a free download from the App Store and includes Apple’s new iBookstore, the best way to browse, buy and read books on a mobile product. The iBooks app will sync your current place in a book, along with any bookmarks, highlights and notes you have created, between copies of the same book on your iPad, iPhone or iPod touch®. iBooks users can also now read and store PDFs right in iBooks. There are now over 60,000 books available in the iBookstore, and users have downloaded over five million books in the first two months.

More than five billion apps have been downloaded from the revolutionary App Store and more than 225,000 apps are available to consumers in 90 countries. Almost 100 million iPhone and iPod touch users around the world can choose from an incredible range of apps in 20 categories, including games, business, news, sports, health, reference and travel.

iPhone 4 delivers an amazing seven hours of talk time on 3G networks, up to 10 hours of web browsing on Wi-Fi and up to six hours on 3G, and up to 10 hours of video playback and up to 40 hours of audio playback.** iPhone 4 is powered by Apple’s new A4 processor that provides exceptional processor and graphic performance along with long battery life. iPhone 4 features a second microphone and advanced software to suppress unwanted background noise for improved call quality when in loud places. iPhone 4 also offers 802.11n Wi-Fi networking and adds quad-band HSUPA to provide 7.2Mbps downlink and 5.8Mbps uplink capability.***

Pricing & Availability

iPhone 4 comes in either black or white and will be available in the US for a suggested retail price of $199 (US) for the 16GB model and $299 (US) for the 32GB model in both Apple and AT&T’s retail and online stores, Best Buy and Wal-Mart stores. iPhone 4 will be available in the US, France, Germany, Japan and the UK on June 24 and customers can pre-order their iPhone 4 beginning Tuesday, June 15 from the Apple Online Store or reserve an iPhone 4 to pick up at an Apple Retail Store. iMovie for iPhone will be available on the App Store for just $4.99 (US).

iPhone 4 will roll out worldwide to 88 countries by the end of September. iPhone 4 will be available by the end of July in Australia, Austria, Belgium, Canada, Denmark, Finland, Hong Kong, Ireland, Italy, Luxembourg, Netherlands, Norway, New Zealand, Singapore, South Korea, Spain, Sweden and Switzerland.

*Qualified customers only. Requires a new two year AT&T rate plan, sold separately.

**Battery life depends on device settings, usage and other factors. Actual results vary.

***Speed is dependent on cellular network capability.

****iOS 4 is compatible with iPhone 3G, iPhone 3GS, iPhone 4, second and third generation iPod touch (late 2009 models with 32GB or 64GB). Some features may not be available on all products. For example, Multitasking requires iPhone 3GS, iPhone 4 or third generation iPod touch (late 2009 models with 32GB or 64GB).

When you think about your iPhone, you think about all the cool things that it can do. You know, all those media functions, and downloading, watching, just about anything you can think of (except watching Flash videos, of course). And when the iPad got announced, with Netflix in tow, many iPhone owners out there felt like they were missing out. Well, you’ve waited long enough, because it’s coming very soon. Oh, and so is Farmville. (You’ve heard of that before, right?)

Reed Hastings came up on stage to talk about Netflix, and what it means to get it on your iPhone. Obviously one of the first things he wanted to bring up was how it was going to work on the go, and he informed the crowd that it’s going to use an adaptive bitrate technology, to make sure that if you switch “networks,” (like your 3G connection, to WiFi, for example), that the streaming isn’t ruined because of the transition. Ultimately, mobility isn’t sacrificed, and for something like the iPhone, that’s huge. As for a release date, Hastings was happy to announce that it’s coming as a free download to the iPhone App Store in the Summer.

Now, one of the biggest complaints about the iPhone’s lack of Flash is the fact that you can’t play Flash games. Luckily for the Cupertino juggernaut, you only need to create an application to get around that. And now Farmville is coming to the iPhone. “Farming for the iPhone.” It will allow you to sync up to your Facebook, and it will use push notifications to inform you of changes as they happen. It’s due out at the end of June.

When Steve Jobs announced the iPad, there was no doubt in his mind that the tablet device from Cupertino would revolutionize the way we use tablets. And, sure enough, we can probably safely say that that’s exactly what’s happened. On Monday, during WWDC 2010, Jobs went over the standard information about the iPad, and how well it’s doing all over the world.

As it stands right now, the iPad has sold over 2 million units since its launch. That breaks down, according to Jobs, to about 3 iPads every single minute. That’s beyond impressive numbers. There are 8,500 native iPad applications available in the iPad App Store, and the tablet itself will be available in 19 countries by the end of July. There’s 17 applications downloaded per iPad, which equals somewhere in the ballpark of 35 million downloads in total. As Jobs puts it: “That’s a great number.”

As for iBooks, that’s only been out for 65 days, and already it’s seen upwards of 5 million books downloaded from its digital bookshelf. That puts between 2 and three books on every iPad out there. There’s going to be an update to iBooks later in June, which offers support for PDFs, as well as new bookmarking controls up in the right-hand corner. The PDF support will come in a brand new bookshelf, specifically designed for them.

Keep following the liveblog at http://live.slashgear.com, as we keep bringing you up to the minute updates!

Geeks around the world who are Apple fans are giddy as kids on Christmas Eve today as WWDC is set to kick off with Steve Jobs taking stage later this afternoon. The world is expecting Steve to show off a new iPhone at WWDC, but other things that might be unveiled are unknown.

One rumor circulating right now has Apple pulling the wraps off a new device called the Magic Trackpad. This is a gesture supporting trackpad peripheral for Mac desktops. I must be in the minority, I hate trackpads. Give me a good mouse any day over a trackpad.

Some claims have the device supporting handwriting recognition, which is a very cool feature. I would love to be able to digitally sign documents. We can only wait until WWDC kicks off later today to find to if this rumor is correct or not.

Tomorrow marks the kick off of WWDC 2010, Apple’s annual developer event, and despite all the leaks, rumors, intrigue and speculation, Steve Jobs is still promising that we “won’t be disappointed.” Top of the list of expected announcements is the fourth-generation iPhone, tentatively expected to be the iPhone HD, and SlashGear will be at the Jobs keynote tomorrow morning, Monday June 7th, to liveblog the whole event at http://live.slashgear.com/.

After the cut… iPhone HD, Safari 5 with lashings of HTML5, iPhone OS 4.0 and more!

The iPhone HD is tipped to have a higher resolution, 960 x 640 IPS display making for the crispest graphics on a smartphone to-date, together with a choice of black and white casings. It’s also expected to be slimmer and more squared off than the existing iPhone 3GS, with a higher resolution main camera – complete with 720p HD video recording and an LED flash for the first time – and a front-facing camera for video calls.

Of course, while that seems as good as locked in, there’s no shortage of other rumors to contend with. Steve Ballmer may not be on stage, but the persistent talk of a Verizon iPhone continues to circulate. Still, that’s not expected to arrive until later in 2010. Meanwhile there’s talk of Safari 5 making its debut – though sometime during WWDC, rather than necessarily at the keynote – complete with new RSS functionality, faster JavaScript, the addition of Bing Search to the options, improved HTML5 support and new developer tools. Considering HTML5 is already going to be a big part of the WWDC developer sessions, the new browser looks increasingly likely.

Finally, we’re expecting news on when exactly we can expect iPhone OS 4.0, bringing with it multitasking, background processes for certain key functionality like streaming audio and navigation, new media playback controls, file sharing and more. Full details on OS 4.0 here.

As always, our liveblog system is auto-updating thanks to some nifty push technology, so you’ll always see the latest news as it’s added and it won’t bog down your browser. We’ve also added in a push comments system this time around, so that readers can add their own feedback to the keynote. We’ll be kicking things off just before 10am PST tomorrow morning (1pm New York; 6pm London), Monday June 7th 2010, at http://live.slashgear.com/, so join us for all the news!

Well, that was quick. We had brought you a story earlier today, about a particular analyst out there who believed, pretty strongly, that Steve Ballmer, CEO of Microsoft, would actually be making an appearance at this year’s WWDC. You know, the one that’s built around Apple’s developer community, and where they’re likely to announce the next iPhone. Apparently Ballmer was going to show up to announce something like Silverlight on the iPhone, or to announce iPhone OS and Mac development tools in Visual Studio 2010. Yeah, it was unbelievable, and sure enough, none of it’s true.

Thanks to Microsoft’s official Twitter, we can safely say that Ballmer won’t be making an appearance at WWDC. Furthermore, he won’t be showing up on Dancing With the Stars, either. And no, he won’t be riding in the Belmont, either. So, consider us relieved to see the hysteria calm down, but a little disappointed that we won’t have something a bit more “shocking” to cover at this year’s WWDC.

Not that the announcement of the iPhone HD isn’t great and all, but we would have loved to see Ballmer and Steve Jobs on the stage together, discussing things we never would have guessed they’d discuss together. Maybe next year. Nevertheless, that doesn’t mean you shouldn’t tune into SlashGear’s liveblog of the whole event, because we’re pretty sure there’s going to be enough there to keep you satiated (at least for a couple of minutes). So join us June 7th at http://live.slashgear.com.

Apple’s June 7th WWDC 2010 keynote is approaching, and thanks to various pre-show leaks of the fourth-generation iPhone HD many are questioning exactly how groundbreaking the Steve Jobs presentation might be. That seems like the ideal opportunity for an analyst face-off: perennial Apple ponderer Gene Munster, of Piper Jaffray, reckons Apple has “little room for surprise” during the event, while Global Equities Research analyst Trip Chowdhry is predicting a seven minute guest appearance during the keynote by none other than Microsoft CEO Steve Ballmer.

Munster is pouring cold water on rumors that Apple will announce a CDMA iPhone at the event, telling investors that “We believe that it is unlikely that the next generation iPhone will be available at Verizon (or Sprint) at launch; rather, it is more likely that it remains exclusively available at AT&T in the U.S. at launch.” Instead he’s tentatively predicting a Mac OS X 10.7 preview demo, though the bulk of the WWDC 2010 developer sessions are focused on the new iPhone OS 4.

As for Ballmer’s presence, Chowdhry believes that Microsoft will be taking to the WWDC stage to announce iPhone OS and Mac development tools in Visual Studio 2010. Unbelievable, perhaps – and the analyst is also covering himself by suggesting that Bob Muglia, head of the Microsoft server and tools division, might show up instead – but all of a sudden we’re all excited about our WWDC 2010 SlashGear liveblog again. Join us on June 7th at http://live.slashgear.com/!

Pushing out a press release confirming that CEO Steve Jobs will be taking to the stage at WWDC 2010 for the opening keynote is unlikely to save Apple from accusations of an over-talkative PR machine, but it all helps pave the way for a likely next-gen iPhone HD debut on June 7th. Jobs will be taking a break from dictating Apple’s movements by email to open the developer conference at 10am PST, and SlashGear will be there to liveblog the whole thing.

As for what we’re expecting, frequent leaks over the past couple of months have made a squared-off next-gen iPhone – tentatively predicted to be the iPhone HD – look all the more likely. The handset is expected to have a higher-megapixel main camera together with a new, front-facing camera, as well as a higher-resolution touchscreen.

We’ll find out for sure on June 7th, so join SlashGear at http://live.slashgear.com/ for all the details Steve announces as they happen.

Steve Jobs has been flexing his typing fingers again, this time dealing with the PR fall-out after Google IO last week. Two iPhone-lovers got in touch with the Apple CEO to ask whether he agrees that Google stands a chance of surpassing the Cupertino company, as well as if he has something particularly juicy up his sleeve at WWDC 2010.

The answers, unsurprisingly, are upbeat. Steve reckons there’s “not a chance” that Google is leapfrogging Apple with the direction in which they’re taking Android, and as for WWDC 2010 despite the existing iPhone HD leaks we’ve seen he still thinks we “won’t be disappointed”.

Google wasn’t shy in taking pot-shots at Apple last week, outlining their dread of a mobile world where one man, one company and one device controls the ecosystem. They also saved a few choice criticisms for Apple’s underwhelming multitasking system, with Vic Gundotra describing it as “bolted on”.

SlashGear will be liveblogging the WWDC 2010 keynote on June 7th, so join us at http://live.slashgear.com/ for all the news as it’s announced!

Ahh, WWDC 2010. A serious sit-down with developers and Apple working together to polish up the app landscape for the twelve months to come, or a chance to wear Steve Jobs masks and run around making crass Microsoft jokes? If you haven’t already got your ticket you’ll never know, as this years conference is sold out.

That’s pretty fast work, considering tickets only went on sale on April 28th, and were a not inconsiderable $1,599 for the full five days. As well as the new contents of iPhone OS 4.0 to pick over, there will be iAd developer workshops and a hefty dose of HTML5.

Of course, for the rest of us what we’re really excited about is the possibility of a few headline hardware announcements on the day one keynote. The iPhone HD seems likely to make its first official appearance, Apple’s fourth-gen smartphone, while more recently we’ve heard mutterings of new, Core i7 hexacore Mac Pro desktops making their debut too. SlashGear will be at WWDC 2010 bringing you all the keynote details in our usual liveblog, so join us on June 7th 2010!

So WWDC 2010 is fast approaching – June 7th we now know – and while developers may be concentrating on getting their apps up to speed with iPhone OS 4.0, the rest of us will be anticipating the debut of the iPhone HD. The fourth-generation iPhone may have been unofficially previewed over the past few weeks, but we’re confident that Steve Jobs & Co. will still have a few surprises in store. While we’d love to stuff you all in our bags and take you in with us, we’ll have to do the next best thing and run the traditional SlashGear liveblog at http://live.slashgear.com/.

So, what do we expect? Well, a hardware redesign seems inevitable, and judging by the leaked prototype it’s likely to be a little smaller than the current iPhone 3GS and adopt blunter edges. A higher-resolution camera with a flash is also on the cards, together with a front-facing video camera. We’ve seen Apple patents recently for various NFC implementations, though there’s no guarantee that such technology would actually make it into this generation of hardware.

Finally, a speedier processor – tipped to be the same 1GHz Apple A4 as in the iPad – and a higher resolution, 960 x 640 display are probable. There’ll also be iPhone OS 4.0, of course. For all the details on June 7th 2010, join us at http://live.slashgear.com/ for the liveblog!

Apple have announced the dates for their Worldwide Developers Conference (WWDC 2010), which will kick off on June 7th 2010 and offer coders the first ever iPad development sessions together with working labs for iPhone OS 4. Registration for the five day event is now open, with sessions including “Using HTML5 Local Data Storage” and “Integrating Ads with iAd“.

Game Center will also be heavily covered, with developers shown how to integrate Apple’s online multitplayer system with their titles. We’re also guessing that “Adopting Multitasking on iPhone OS” will be a popular session, as devs get to grips with iPhone OS 4.0′s ability to run some APIs in the background.

Meanwhile Apple will also be awarding prizes to ten software developers as part of their Apple Design Award, with an equal split between iPhone and iPad apps. Attendance doesn’t come cheap, however; a single ticket to the five day event is $1,599, though we’re still expecting them to sell out relatively quickly.
