o2 germany toshiba tg01Snapdragon’s appearance in various netbooks over the past few days may have distracted you from the fact that its first proper showing will likely be in the Toshiba TG01.  O2 Germany had already announced their intention to carry the Windows Mobile smartphone, but they’ve now confirmed that it’ll be arriving on the market within the next three weeks.

The TG01 is interesting inside and out, with the Qualcomm Snapdragon QSD2850 1GHz processor inside and a 4.1-inch WVGA resistive touchscreen on the outside.  The whole thing is just 9.9mm thick, despite packing WiFi, HSPA, GPS, Bluetooth and a microSD slot content with up to 32GB cards.  Check out our live photos and video of the smartphone for more details.

sony ericsson xperia x2 leakThis, if Engadget’s anonymous tipster is to be believed, is Sony Ericsson’s unannounced XPERIA X2, the smartphone that will eventually replace the company’s XPERIA X1.  Bearing a slide-out QWERTY keyboard, as with its predecessor, and what looks to be a curved profile, the X2 – codenamed “Vulcan” – bears the X Panel shortcut Sony Ericsson use to trigger their panel GUI.

acer f900 smartphone 282x480Acer’s F900 smartphone – first announced back at Mobile World Congress in February – has finally launched.  Offering Windows Mobile 6.1, the F900 has a 3.8-inch WVGA touchscreen, HSDPA/HSUPA connectivity and Acer’s new 2.0 User Interface on top of the Microsoft OS.

The F900 is shipped with Internet Explorer 6 with Adobe Flash Lite support, together with Acer’s Easy Keyboard.  There’s also a YouTube app, Google Maps and GPS.  Around the back, there’s a 3-megapixel camera.

The Acer F900 is now available in the UK, unlocked, at £429 ($709).  No word on whether Acer will be offering upgrades to Windows Mobile 6.5 once the new OS reaches the market, but the fact that the F900 has a Windows-logo key (a feature of WM6.5 devices) rather than the traditional Home icon does suggest that owners will be able to update.

windows mobile 6 5While Windows Mobile devices have their strong points, the platform’s UI has longed looked like the third-class citizen compared to rivals.  Windows Mobile 6.5 will go some small way to addressing that, but even the team behind the smartphone OS themselves admit that they lacked the time to give the upcoming refresh the visual makeover it needs.

The WM6.5 developer team sat down for a 45 minute roundtable at TechEd 2009, to confirm UI rumors, discuss Widgets and why they count as “grown up” applications, and admit that no, Silverlight won’t be integrated with the platform.  It’s a surprisingly honest interview, but if we’re fair it doesn’t leave us particularly enthused about WM6.5.

It’s set to be a tough year for smartphones, and there’s plenty of change afoot as companies battle amid tightening customer purse-strings.  The new iPhone is set to arrive over the summer; Palm’s Pre is imminent, and Microsoft have the latest incarnation of Windows Mobile waiting in the wings.  Into that fray, HTC launch the Touch Diamond2, likely one of the last smartphones to use WM6.1 and an update to what was considered, when it launched a year ago, one of the game-changing handsets of Microsoft’s platform.  Can the HTC Touch Diamond2 maintain that legacy, and will TouchFLO 3D improvements sufficiently mask the aging OS?  SlashGear set to finding out.
