As Microsoft ramps up their outlay of Windows 8.1, a system which takes a variety of Windows 8 parts that needed improvement and … improves them, there’s chat of a next-generation release called “Threshold,” aka Windows 9. Speaking on the subject with sources just about as close to the source as you can get without actually tapping Microsoft publicly, Windows insider Paul Thurrott suggests that this next big release will have Microsoft attempting to “put Windows 8 in the rear-view mirror.”

Lenovo ThinkPad X1 Carbon unveiled as world’s lightest 14-inch notebook

Lenovo has rolled out the red carpet for its ThinkPad X1 Carbon, an offering it says is the thinnest 14-inch ultrabook available. Saying it is a "beautiful contradition," the X1 Carbon is designed to be nearly indestructible, and yet is very thin and weighs only 2.8 pounds. As the name suggests, the laptop is constructed from carbon fiber, making it both lighter and stronger than aluminum and magnesium.

Surface Pro 2 gets sly upgrade as Microsoft swaps CPU

Microsoft has quietly upgraded the Surface Pro 2, with new hardware including faster processors being sent out to those who returned their Windows 8 tablets after the December firmware update debacle. Although Microsoft yanked the firmware package before every Surface Pro 2 user could upgrade it, some owners sent back their tablets for replacement, only to find, WinBeta reports, that the hardware returned had a newer generation of Intel Core i5 processor inside.

The reboot of the Samsung ATIV Book collection of high-powered notebooks is looking a lot like the slightly more mobile universe this week with a glimpse at the faux-stitch back of one unit. ASUS VivoTab Note 8 leaked with Windows and active digitizer

Earlier this week, evidence surfaced on ASUS's website of a tablet referred to as model M80TA, something that was speculated as a possible small Transformer Book. This led to some digging around on the part of German website Mobile Geeks, which discovered the tablet is actually called the ASUS VivoTab Note 8, an 8-inch Windows-toting tablet and what would be a first in that form factor for the company.
