Sprint “product development guru” jumps ship

, Aug 13th 2010 Discuss [0]

Sprint has lost a Senior VP, Kevin Packingham, described as the carrier's "product development guru" and supposedly instrumental in paving the way for the WiMAX-friendly HTC EVO 4G and the upcoming Samsung Epic 4G.  The carrier confirmed that Packingham has left his role to take up another position at an unnamed Kansas City company; Sprint will now have to find a new expert to demonstrate their high-end devices at launch events. Samsung Epic 4G for Sprint Available August 31st for $249.99, Reservations Beginning August 13th

, Aug 11th 2010 Discuss [1]

Sure enough, August 11th turned out to be something worthwhile. Thanks to Samsung, we can now safely say that we know when the Epic 4G, Sprint's second 4G-equipped device, will be hitting the airwaves this year. The Epic 4G is the most distinct variation of the Samsung Galaxy S devices launching here in the States: featuring a 4-inch Super AMOLED capacitive touchscreen display, a 1GHz Hummingbird processor under the hood, a full physical QWERTY keyboard on a landscape slider, and Samsung's proprietary TouchWiz 3.0 User Interface overlaying Android 2.1, the Epic 4G also sits high on the hill thanks to its ability to connect to Sprint's 4G WiMAX network. Clearwire to Begin Testing Co-Existence of WiMax and LTE in the Fall

, Aug 4th 2010 Discuss [0]

Right now, Clearwire's 4G network is based entirely on the WiMax technology. The same one that Sprint uses for their own infrastructure. But, Clear has come forward in the past to say that they've never counted Long Term Evolution (LTE) out, and now with this new report, it looks like they're strengthening that statement. With tests planned in the Fall of this year, Clear will take a hard look at LTE. Read The Full Story

Verizon’s 4G Roadmap Leaks, Seems to be Right on Schedule

, Aug 2nd 2010 Discuss [1]

Right now, Sprint's got 4G down. Their WiMAX-backed next-generation wireless technology is popping up in cities all over the country, and they've got their first 4G-enabled device out there, in the hands of customers. But, that's obviously not stopping the largest wireless carrier in this neck of the woods from moving right along with their own next-gen connection options. Verizon, though, will be using Long Term Evolution, and not WiMAX, and according to a newly leaked document detailing the future of the roll-out, it looks like Verizon is right on schedule and moving along quite nicely. That now makes forty-eight metropolitan areas with WiMAX coverage - the full list is in the press release below - and Sprint reckon subscribers will see up to ten-times the performance of a regular 3G connection. Sprint has apparently done what many thought impossible: finished testing on Android 2.2 for the EVO 4G, before the end of the year. In fact, it's happening next week. There had been some rumors earlier today that suggested the update would actually start trickling out to EVO owners beginning tomorrow, but it looks like Sprint has come forward and set the record straight. Best Buy Connect Service Inks Deal with Clearwire to Offer 4G

, Jul 29th 2010 Discuss [0]

Just over a month ago, we told you that Clearwire had their sights set on installing WiMAX modems into a bunch of Intel Core-based notebooks, which would then subsequently be sold through Best Buy some time by the holiday shopping season. Even as the report hit the 'net, there were still plenty of questions. Primarily, was this a one time thing, or would a new deal come from the situation? It looks like we have our answer, as Best Buy and Clear have just made it possible for the two to work closely together to bring 4G service to people. Read The Full Story

, Jul 21st 2010 Discuss [0]

"You snooze, you lose" may not be the most eloquent way of putting it, but Sprint CEO Dan Hesse knows that the longer it takes to get customers onto shiny devices like the EVO 4G, the more chance his carrier rivals have to overtake him in high-speed mobile networks.  T-Mobile USA has just announced that their HSPA+ network is now the most pervasive in the country, currently covering more than 85m people and on track, the carrier promises, to offer HSPA+ to over 185m people by the end of 2010. Sprint and T-Mobile Merger a Possibility Thanks to Logic, According to Dan Hesse

, Jul 13th 2010 Discuss [6]

Right now, Sprint is sitting high with all of their 4G talk. They've got their first 4G phone out there in the wild, and they've got 4G popping up in cities all over the United States. And while at this very moment they're using the same technology that Clearwire is (WiMAX), apparently that's still not stopping them from thinking about transitioning to LTE (Long Term Evolution) some time in the future. On top of that, a T-Mobile merger apparently holds a lot of logic. Read The Full Story
