As the book “The New Digital World” is published this week by Google’s Eric Schmidt and co-author Jared Cohen, a transcript of a “secret” meeting held between the two men and WikiLeaks founder Julian Assange has come to light. The transcript of this meeting – as well as the audio (uploaded this week) has been being mined by the public, revealing notes such as the one appearing today involving “internet educated youth” as spoken about by both Assange and Cohen.

While the original intent of those involved in this meeting was the exchange comments which would eventually be used in the book The New Digital Age: Reshaping the Future, it would appear that it wasn’t Schmidt or Assange that approved of the transcript of the meeting being published by WikiLeaks. The WikiLeaks team is part of the subject being spoken about, this youth which is becoming radicalized in our modern internet age.

Jared Cohen: I am just wondering, on the human side of this, you have such experience of the world you described earlier. …some combination of technical and altruistic people and what amounts to a kind of subculture that you’ve been in for some 15 years now.. So you know about how the subculture works. And that subculture needs to either I guess stay the same or expand in order to do the work that you are describing, and so since our book is about ten years away…

Julian Assange: It’s dramatically expanded…

JC: What are the patterns there in terms of the people part, rather than the…?

JA: That’s the most optimistic thing that is happening. The radicalization of internet educated youth. People who are receiving their values from the internet… and then as they find them to be compatible echoing them back. The echo back is now so strong that it drowns the original statements.

Completely.

The people I’ve dealt with from the 1960s radicals who helped liberate Greece and.. Salazar. They are saying that this moment in time is the most similar to what happened in this period of liberation movements in the 1960s, that they have seen.

Assange continued by expanding on the idea that young people are changing the way our society acts and thinks with the tools they’ve created for themselves with the internet. This age we’re in now, he says, is one in which the technical generation that created the internet – and those that are coming in with the web as a given – are becoming politically educated.

JA: This is the political education of apolitical technical people. It is extraordinary, in the same way that the young…

Lisa Shields: A-political? Do you mean one word?

JA: One word. People are going from… young people are going from apolitical to political. It is a very very interesting transition to see.

Lisa Shields is another of the very few people in the room during this conversation, she having been mentioned in our first short glimpse into this environment last week. This isn’t the last time we’ll be jumping in to this set of ideas being explored by Schmidt and Cohen – now that the book is out, we’ll be leaping in all week long!

This week a chat between Google’s own Eric Schmidt and the head of the organization known as WikiLeaks, Julian Assange, has been revealed in full. This conversation has been typed out in transcript form and revealed to the public by none other than WikiLeaks itself, releasing this document just ahead of the publication of the book The New Digital Age: Reshaping the Future. This is significant due to the book’s co-author, Jared Cohen, also apparently being present at the meeting with Assange.

The transcript at hand – which you can access [here] – is said to be a complete write-up of a five-hour chat between Schmidt, Assange, Cohen, and Lisa Shields. Cohen is otherwise known as a former Secretary of State advisor to Hillary Clinton. Lisa Shields hails from the Council on Foreign Relations.

At the time of the recording from which the transcript was transcribed, Assange was under house arrest in the UK. The meeting took place in a single day, the 23rd of June, 2011, and according to WikiLeaks, it was Schmidt and Cohen that requested the meeting “to discuss ideas for” their book.

“To be used in a book by Eric Schmidt, due to be published by Knopf in October 2012. I have been given a guarantee that I will see the transcript and will be able to adjust it for accuracy and clarity.” – Assange

One of the first subjects that has turned up as telling – and will almost certainly appear in the forthcoming book – is Schmidt and Assange’s words exchanged on a government’s ability to turn off the internet. Using mobile phones, they note, things have changed drastically.

ES: When we were sort of chatting initially we talked about my idea that powering, mobile phones being powered, is sort of changing society. A rough summary of your answer for everybody else is that people are very much the same and something big has to change their behaviour, and this might be one of them, and you said, you were very interested in someone building phone to phone encryption.

Can you talk a little bit about, roughly, the architecture where you would have a broad open network and you have person to person encryption. What does that mean technically, how would it work, why is it important. That kind of stuff. I mean, I think people don’t understand any of this area in my view.

JA: When we were dealing with Egypt we saw the Mubarak government cut off the internet and we saw only one – there was one ISP that quite few of us were involved in trying to keep its connections open, it had maybe 6% of the market. Eventually they cut.. eventually the Mubarak government also cut off the mobile phone system. And why is it that that can be done?

People with mobile phones have a device that can communicate in a radio spectrum. In a city there is a high density… there is always, if you like, a path between one person and another person. That is there is always a continuous path of mobile phones, each one can in theory hear the radio of the other.

This conversation continues for over 25000 words – you’ll want to take a deep dive as we continue investigating throughout the day (and through the future, too). If you’re feeling really intrepid, you may want to download the page just incase it’s taken down or redacted in any way in the near future as well.

For this particular situation we’d love for you, the reader, to engage with us in taking a look at this WikiLeaks document. In our Facebook Chat today we’ll be discussing this document in-depth.

Many people have commented on the Aaron Swartz case that came to a close when the 26-year-old Internet activist committed suicide earlier this month, but now WikiLeaks has chimed in with a series of very interesting tweets. Over the weekend, the WikiLeaks Twitter account posted four tweets that detail the website’s relationship with Swartz. Through these tweets, we find out that not only did Swartz assist the website, but he also may have been a source.

We say “may have been” because apparently even WikiLeaks isn’t sure. The final tweet in the series reads “We have strong reasons to believe, but cannot prove, that Aaron Swartz was a WikiLeaks source,” suggesting that the website can’t prove if he was or wasn’t either way. The Verge points to WikiLeaks’ policy on anonymous sources to show how the website splits information on users up so even it would have a hard time identifying them. Provided WikiLeaks actually does that, then the tweet about not being able to prove Swartz was a source could be nothing but the truth, instead of WikiLeaks simply trying to cover itself.

One tweet also claims that Swartz was in contact with WikiLeaks founder Julian Assange in 2010 and 2011. Given WikiLeaks’ policy of not revealing its sources, it’s easy to see why these tweets are so significant. On the other hand, it’s also difficult to know why WikiLeaks has chosen to out this information now, when it never has done anything like this in the past. After all, WikiLeaks has a history of standing up to investigators and those who would like to know information like this.

CNET got in touch with WikiLeaks representative Kristinn Hrafnsson, who confirmed that the tweets were the real deal, but didn’t say anything else. Hrafnsson did say, however, that he would answer questions at a later time, so let’s hope he sticks to that and sheds some light on these tweets. Stay tuned, because with WikiLeaks entering the conversation, things just got pretty interesting.

Sometimes people do bizarre things and try to call it art. Such is the case with what is being called a live mail art piece that has been sent to Wikileaks founder Julian Assange. As you might recall Assange has been living at the Ecuadorian Embassy in London since June of 2012.

Assange was granted political asylum by Ecuador in August of 2012, but he is unable to leave the embassy because he fears being arrested by authorities in the UK. Assange landed in hot water for leaking confidential documents via his website Wikileaks. The artwork in question at this point is a package that someone has dropped in the mail and sent to Assange via the Royal Mail.

The package isn’t exactly normal and has a camera hidden inside that is able to take photographs of what is going on outside the box every 10 seconds. The package was mailed on Wednesday, January 16 and is expected to arrive at its destination within 24 hours. The person who sent the package says that if the first one fails to reach Assange, a second and even third attempt will be made.

So for the images the camera system has taken are incredibly boring. The camera is designed to snap a picture every 10 seconds and upload it live to the web at the source link at the bottom of the source page. The image you see above is a nice shot of the wall behind the package as it sits somewhere. Underneath the live pictures are some descriptions of what’s been going on, and again the descriptions are incredibly boring.

Welcome to Friday, folks. The weekend is here once again, and what better way to kick off the festivities than with a Windows 8 purchase? The new OS went up for pre-order today, while a number of other Windows 8-related stories were popping up all over the place. For instance, we found out that the marketing campaign for Windows 8 cost Microsoft a whopping $1.5 billion, and a collection of HP computers were spotted running Windows 8 on the show floor of one Best Buy store in Minnesota.

Dell is getting in early on the Windows 8 action, opening up pre-orders for a handful of new machines today, and we learned that a staggering 6 billion people around the world are now using a mobile phone of some type. A leaked T-Mobile release roadmap gives us an idea of when the carrier expects to receive a bunch of different devices, including the Windows Phone 8X. We received a rather in-depth look at an LG Nexus prototype today, and LG delivered a brand new Optimus G “product movie” that aims to get us familiar with the new handset’s features. Netflix released a Windows 8-compatible version of its app today, just ahead of the launch of the OS.

Google could be headed for an antitrust case from the FTC, and it seems that the Apple Maps controversy hasn’t done much to damage consumer enthusiasm for the iPhone 5. Speaking of the iPhone 5, Apple’s latest mobile offering has managed to overtake the Samsung Galaxy S III in web traffic despite being available for a much shorter amount of time, and Google is getting the Play Store ready for the holiday rush. SoftBank is looking to secure $23 billion to buy a majority stake in Sprint, and industry insiders are claiming that the long-rumored iPad Mini will be revealed on October 23 – just a couple weeks from now.

Star Citizen has already managed to raise an absurd $500,000 in funding, while Borderlands 2 was seen outshining its predecessor in a pretty significant way. We learned that the games industry is still on the decline, and ASUS unveiled a brand new Windows 8 VivoBook today. Amazon is now posting a disclaimer about the Kindle Paperwhite’s backlighting, YouTube is rethinking the way it ranks videos for search results, and Anonymous has cut ties with Wikileaks after the website started restricting access and asking visitors for donations.

Finally tonight, we have an unboxing and hands-on with the Huawei MediaPad 10 FHD for you to check out, and Chris Burns tells us why every little piece of Apple news seems to matter so much these days. That does it for tonight’s Evening Wrap-Up, here’s hoping that this weekend is a good one!

Once upon a time, Wikileaks and Anonymous were best friends. Wikileaks would get bullied by “the man,” and Anonymous would bring down government websites in retaliation. They seemed to make a good pair, like chocolate and peanut butter or Mario and Yoshi (sorry Luigi). Today, however, it seems that Anonymous wants out of this relationship, despite the fact that Wikileaks could use a lot of help right about now.

It isn’t much of a secret that Wikileaks and founder Julian Assange are strapped for cash these days. Assange is facing a lot of legal bills, and Visa, MasterCard, and PayPal all decided cut off service to Wikileaks a couple years back, which did a lot to block funding to the site. Needing to raise cash quickly, Wikileaks imposed a paywall on October 10, which blocks out the page users are trying to view with an overlay requesting donations. Once users donate, they gain access to the site, although disabling Javascript will get rid of the overlay as well.

This paywall has Anonymous – once one of Wikileaks’ biggest allies – angry. In a new statement, Anonymous says that it has been concerned about the direction of Wikileaks for some time now, but this paywall is the straw that breaks the camel’s back. Anonymous has apparently had enough of Wikileaks, saying that it can no longer be associated with the site it fully supported in the past:

Anonymous has had enough. The conclusion for us is that Anonymous cannot support anymore what Wikileaks has become. We will NOT attack the web assets of WikiLeaks, as they are media. We do not attack media. Any future attack on the WikiLeaks servers attributed to Anonymous is a lie. But what we will do is cease from this day all support of any kind for WikiLeaks or Julian Assange. No longer will Anonymous risk prison to defend WikiLeaks or Julian Assange from their enemies. No longer will Anonymous risk prison to supply material for WikiLeaks disclosures. Anonymous turns it’s back on WikiLeaks.

And just like that, Wikileaks has lost the support of an organization that has come to its aid many times in the past. Anonymous members have been arrested while attacking government websites in the name of Wikileaks and Assange, but it’s clear from this statement that Anonymous members won’t be willing to put themselves in harm’s way for Wikileaks any longer. Anonymous says that it will have a more detailed statement on its history with Wikileaks coming in a few days, so we’ll keep our eyes peeled for that. Stay tuned.

Anonymous is at it once again, this time launching what is being called “the biggest thing to ever happen in Anonymous history.” The group posted a video to YouTube yesterday in which is calls for Anonymous supporters to help it attack a number of Swedish government sites for the perceived slights against The Pirate Bay and controversial Wikileaks founder Julian Assange. Today, The Wall Street Journal is reporting that, sure enough, a number of Swedish websites have been taken offline after being flooded with traffic.

That includes the websites of the Swedish Security Service, the Swedish Prosecutors’ Office, and the Swedish Central Bank. It sounds like these sites were all taken down by DDoS attacks, which has become the trademark weapon of Anonymous throughout the years, in a way. In all, over 20 Swedish sites have been taken down this week, though authorities can’t say at this time if all of those attacks are related.

It’s clear that Anonymous is behind at least some of them, however. This new operation is being called #OpPRQ #OpPirateBay, and though some were claiming this was a honeypot – essentially a government-organized setup to catch these Anonymous members in the act – the AnonNCarolina2 Twitter account said earlier today that there isn’t any evidence that a honeypot is being carried out.

Interestingly, The Pirate Bay has been down for a few days now, and we’re not really sure why. Earlier this week, The Pirate Bay’s former host, PRQ (the same service mentioned in the name of this operation) was raided by police, but The Pirate Bay Facebook page says there’s no relation between the raid and the site outage. Instead, the outage seems to be the result of “power problems,” though we aren’t getting anything in the way of specifics. Whatever the reason, those who run The Pirate Bay expect the site to be back up tomorrow, and it appears that this Anonymous operation will be ongoing, so we’ll share any new details that surface. Stay tuned.

The strange nature of the relationship between Anonymous and WikiLeaks has been detailed in a report from International Business Times. Members of the group spoke to IBTimes following a Twitter row over the leaked emails from Syria, with one individual saying the relationship between the two entities is “complex.” As it turns out, there’s crossover between both groups, with some individuals working on both sides to gather and expose information.

Anonymous and WikiLeaks are said to have similar aspirations, hence the heavy crossover between the personnel: “Both groups are first and foremost information activists, so there is a common ground between us.” One member of Anonymous went on to detail the work behind the Syria email leaks, saying the group working tirelessly to breach “multiple domains and dozens of servers.” While the information was handed off to WikiLeaks, the organization didn’t reveal its relationship with Anonymous.

The hacktivist group doesn’t seem to mind, however: “Nor would they be expected to reveal their source that is after all what WikiLeaks is all about.” There’s also the fact that WikiLeaks seems to have no qualms about releasing any information. Anonymous is said to have negotiated with Al-Jazeera regarding the release of the email dumps, but “no suitable disclosure agreement could be negotiated.”

Still, Anonymous is looking ahead to the future. Members of the group have recently launched their own version of Wikileaks, dubbed Par:AnoIA. The site is designed is host Anonymous leaks, and is said to have been created to gain better media coverage for highly sensitive dumps and expose information faster than WikiLeaks.

WikiLeaks has recovered from a massive DDoS attack that lasted three days, during which it had to shift much of its content to mirror sites. It’s unclear which hacker group or individual may be responsible for the attack, but a former Anonymous member by the name Nyre has already claimed credit for a similar DDoS attack on The Pirate Bay earlier this week that lasted over 24 hours.

Nyre claims to be a former Anonymous member that is now against the activities of the notorious hacker group and attacked The Pirate Bay due to Anonymous’ use of the site to publicize its operations. The hacker posted the following message to Pastebin:

“You must be wondering why did I attacked The Pirate Bay. I am Nyre. I am highly against Anonymous. I do not support Anonymous anymore. I sometimes help the feds. The Pirate Bay was a press-release website for Anonymous, then I had a idea, why not take it down? Why not make it impossible for Anonymous? Get on your knees, Anonymous. I am a one-man army. I am not a hacker. I am a security killer. Expect yourself, f******.”

Although the massive DDoS attack against WikiLeaks during the same week seems to be more than a coincidence, no one has stepped forward to claim responsibility yet and there are plenty of groups that may be motivated to take down the whistle-blowing site, even for no good reason at all.

The latest notch in WikiLeaks’s bedpost appears to the Stratfor, an intelligence analysis firm that has provided reports on everything from politics and economics to military issues. The company offers a subscription-based service to offer this information to risk managers, and in its line of work has gotten its hands on a lot of information that should be confidential.

And of course we all know that’s exactly the kind of thing WikiLeaks likes to get its hands on. The group announced that it has begun publishing e-mails obtained from Stratfor, and it can continue to do so for quite a while. It said it has collected more than five million e-mail exchanges. WikiLeaks is collaborating with dozens of international media groups to distribute the pilfered correspondences.

Stratfor issued a statement today, calling WikiLeaks’s actions “a deplorable, unfortunate — and illegal — breach of privacy.” The company said the messages that were stolen were the same ones that WikiLeaks already managed to gain access to during the Christmas season. Details that remain unclear are how WikiLeaks got access to the private e-mails, and what the extent is of the information they contained.

This week the customers of global intelligence firm Stratfor fell victim to the hacker amalgamation known as Anonymous, and starting today the folks at Dazzlepod have made a webpage available where you, the user, can check your email to make sure you weren’t amongst those hit. The Dazzlepod collective has a searchable database which includes all of the information stolen and dumped by Anonymous over the past few attacks, this able to be searched by you to see if your email is amongst those compromised. A lovely service for those wishing to stay clean!

The folks at Dazzlepod are located in Malaysia and have over 750,000 accounts on file for your searching pleasure, this nothing more than a collection of what’s already been made available to the public by Anonymous. Where what Anonymous has done is to make secrets available to the public, Dazzlepod aims to help those who wish to remain anonymous. Sound like a bit of a paradox to you? Stratfor’s computers were compromised over this holiday weekend and a list of their international strategic forecasting users were posted online thusly – now you can check if you’re there.

You can find the full intent of the Anonymous hacker attack at Pastebin if you like, a bit of that text available here now:

Stratfor was not breached in order to obtain customer credit card numbers, which the hackers in question could not have expected to be as easily obtainable as they were. Rather, the operation was pursued in order to obtain the 2.7 million e-mails that exist on the firm’s servers. This wealth of data includes correspondence with untold thousands of contacts who have spoken to Stratfor’s employees off the record over more than a decade. Many of those contacts work for major corporations within the intelligence and military contracting sectors, government agencies, and other institutions for which Anonymous and associated parties have developed an interest since February of 2011, when another hack against the intelligence contractor/security firm HBGary revealed, among many other things, a widespread conspiracy by the Justice Department, Bank of America, and other parties to attack and discredit Wikileaks and other activist groups.

Wikileaks abound! Hopefully you weren’t part of the wheels that are turning now, ladies and gentlemen, as justice may or may not be done soon!

In a move that should surprise noone on this earth, the movie rights to a pair of books about Julian Assange and his undeniably controversial website WikiLeaks. Over the past year or so, WikiLeaks has become a household name in revealing “secret” government and private business documents, causing a ruckus at every level of money changing and United States security and beyond. Now DreamWorks studio has decided this epic story would make at least one fabulous movie to be released in a few years from now – if it gets released at all.

The books being optioned are “WikiLeaks: Inside Julian Assange’s War on Secrecy” by journalists David Leigh and Luke Harding of The Guardian, and “Inside WikiLeaks: My Time with Julian Assange at the World’s Most Dangerous Website” by Daniel Domscheit-Berg, a former partner of Assange that’s currently what’s known as a “defector” from the organization. As mentioned above, the movie isn’t at a point where it’s been green-lit by any means, and no director or producer is yet slated to be attached.

One of the inspirations for this particular set of actions is almost certainly “The Social Network,” aka the Facebook Movie. This film made approximately $221 million at worldwide box offices and found itself the earner of a best picture Oscar nomination in 2011. Co-presidents of DreamWorks, Holly Bario and Mark Sourian, have decided to option the books mentioned more than likely because even making that $221 million, the Facebook movie will appear quite tame in terms of drama when compared to this new global hero story.

Wikileaks isn’t the best-loved website in the world right now. Anyone associated with the leak page and its crusade against everyone are coming under harsh scrutiny. And that includes Anonymous, the Internet’s blind, vicious animal brain.

As a response to the near-global censure of Wikileaks, Anonymous launched D-DOS attacks at Amazon, PayPal, MasterCard, Visa and a PostFinance, a Swiss bank. MasterCard and Visa both went down under the strain. The website for the Swedish prosecutor going after Assange was also downed in a hail of bots.

Government response has been swift and terrible. The FBI executed 40+ search warrants on members of Anonymous this week. At the same time, 5 members of Anonymous were arrested in the UK for the same attacks.

This isn’t the first time members of Anonymous have run afoul of the law. Back in 2008, a number of them were arrested in the flesh at a protest in Atlanta. Alex Tapanaris, may have been arrested in Greece (but claims it didn’t happen), while two teenagers in the Netherlands were arrested for the pro-Wikileaks attacks last December.

At this point, it is fully clear that “Anonymous” can’t (or never could) rely on anonymity from the entities they strike. So far, the mass of users are protected by sheer numbers and their relatively low level on the “collaboration” flagpole. But arrests like these may have a chilling effect on the people who put the most effort into organizing and executing these mass attacks.

The future of Wikileaks is questionable at best. But that website’s death (or neutering) won’t be enough to stop a new wave of whistleblowing. The first new wave of leak sites is already here.

	1. OpenLeaks: Formed by Daniel Domscheit-Berg, former co-spokesman of Wikileaks, and a number of other people who once worked under Assange.

	Location: OpenLeaks.org.

Purpose: To act as an intermediary between leakers, and corporate watchdog groups / news agencies. OpenLeaks will not profit from the exchange of information. Leakers will be able to designate a single recipient who will have exclusive access to the information for a limited embargo period. After that ends, all OpenLeaks “partners” will gain access to the data.

	2. GreenLeaks (via Denmark): Formed by an ad executive and with the support of the Nordic branch of GreenPeace. They have a number of volunteers and private backers.

	Location: GreenLeaks.org

Purpose: In their own words, “Counterintelligence for the Earth”. There is no one, Assange-like leader to the organization and the focus seems to be on publicizing leaks, not the site itself.

	3. GreenLeaks (via Germany): Yes, they both have the same name. This one was formed by Aussie docu-journalist Scott Millwood. The two agencies may end up in a legal battle for the name.

Location: Greenleaks.com

Purpose: To spread leaks “of environmental significance”. They have a strong central head and spokesman- Scott Millwood- but differ from WikiLeaks in having an open agenda in their distribution of information. They “take an active role in facilitating stakeholders using information”. In other words, they aren’t just throwing data out there for people to digest, but assembling it to argue a point and then handing it out.

4. EnviroLeaks: The poor man’s version of the two above sites. Right now, they’re mainly collecting data from WikiLeaks and gathering damning data that is, nonetheless, currently available.

Location: EnviroLeaks.org

Purpose: Information aggregation. There’s nothing new here, but it’s a good place to find existing data organized in a useful manner.

5. BalkanLeaks: A bunch of journos and activists committed to creating a Wiki-leaks style site with a regional focus on the Balkans.

Location: Balkanleaks.eu

Purpose: As stated on the site, “to promote transparency and fight the nexus of organized crime and political corruption in the Balkan states.” It’s kind of sobering to think of the risk these folks are taking. Their site isn’t particularly slick or fancy, but it represents a stab of resistance that could never have happened without the Internet.

It seems that the hacker group going by the name Anonymous may not have been as anonymous in their DDoS attacks leveled against perceived enemies of WikiLeaks as they thought. The hacker group ran a massive DDoS attack against a number of websites that stopped working with WikiLeaks after the site came under significant fire for posting government documents.

The goal of the Anonymous attacks was to punish sites like Visa, PayPal, and MasterCard for severing ties with WikiLeaks and was called Operation Payback. Police all around the world are working hard to find the servers that were used for the DDoS attacks against the websites, which forced some of them offline for a while.

The investigation started in Germany and a raid produced evidence that linked the attacks to IRC servers at Tailor Made Services in Dallas, Texas where the FBI sized two HDDs on December 16. The FBI also raided a California provider called Hurricane Electric. After the DDoS, attackers didn’t have the desired effect the Anonymous group decided to start posting WikiLeaks documents around the web with misleading titles.

You would have to live under a rock, or even worse not have internet access to not know the saga of WikiLeaks that has been going on over the last few months. All of the leaked documents that the site published finally came back to bite the site and the man behind the curtain is facing some serious criminal charges.

Apple has now removed the WikiLeaks app from the App Store. The app wasn’t official and was designed to let you follow the site via the WikiLeaks Twitter account. The app was pulled at some point early this morning apparently.

The app was very short lived with TechCrunch reporting that it had only gone live on December 17, which was last Friday. The app sold for $1.99 and was one of those apps that many were surprised to see approved at all considering the controversy around the site right now. I wonder if Apple will use the kill switch to pull the app from the devices of anyone who happened to buy.

Swedish newspaper Dagens Nyheter let the world know that former members of the WikiLeaks staff have quit their former jobs (they got paid? weird!) to start a new site next week called Openleaks. Dagens Nyheter reports that their action is to be in protest of their former leader Julian Assange. Why? Dagens Nyheter reports an anonymous (not THE Anonymous) member of the new group as saying: “Our long-term goal is to build a strong, transparent platform to support whistleblowers, both in terms of technology and politics, while at the same time encouraging others to start similar projects.”

The source speaking with DN continued by saying that their goal with Openleaks will be to complete the technical infrastructure and make sure that “the organization continues to be democratically governed by all its members, rather than limited to one group or individual.” Oh snap, Assange dissed. A separate source (still speaking with DN) continued, “As a result of our intention not to publish any document directly and in our own name, we do not expect to experience the kind of political pressure which WikiLeaks is under at this time. In that aspect, it is quite interesting to see how little of politicians’ anger seems directed at the newspapers using WikiLeaks sources,”

This was all yesterday, today, all of this seems to be legitimized by DN in an article by writer Hans Rosén, who says Openleaks must surely be seeking protection from the law. He writes [translated]: “Openleaks calls itself the “provider”, which indicates that it intends to invoke the so-called “mere conduit” principle, in Swedish called “budbärarimmunitet.” This is a cornerstone of the laws of Sweden, the EU and many other countries.”

He continues, “In brief, the providers of communications services, such as mail or internet, shall not be held responsible for the content that they convey. A person is not guilty of the drug that’s in a package he has transported. ISP is not responsible for the customer uses their connection to illegal file sharing.”

Stirring up some rather disturbingly exciting ideas, mister Rosen! Do continue! He completes his article by noting “And if this works, it is no longer a lonely hacker who must be silenced. Enraged people in power will instead face a worldwide collective of editors and editors and the law that protects them. In this vision, the old media publishers also have access to new digital tools they themselves had not been able to build.”

Take a look at the whois information on the openleaks.com domain name and you’ll see that it’s registered through a US group by the name of Oneanddone, (this is the image you see above.)

We all know you can’t believe everything you read or find online. Sometimes the things we run across are lies, misleads or just outright wrong. It’s hard to get away from the drama that is Wikileaks right now so I will assume you are all familiar with the issues around the site and the anonymous group that has been attacking sites perceived to be enemies of Wikileaks.

So far the group has attacked MasterCard, PayPal, Visa, and Amazon. A new image has surfaced online with a sort of manifesto for the plans that are coming since the DDoS attacks have only given the Wikileaks non-supporters a “black eye.”

The image supposedly from one of the heads of the group Anonymous and calls for the people to read through the Wikileaks documents and find the ones that are good, but haven’t been publicized. The group is then calling for members to spam the posts everywhere. Make YouTube videos of themselves reading the posts, and to post them on forums and other places with misleading titles. The reason the image maker reasons is that the people fear exposure more than they fear DDoS attacks. For the record, I fear snakes more than exposure or spam.
