Nintendo mobile games denied: Nikkei mix-up

Yesterday a rather quick-spreading report of Nintendo very possibly moving to mobile devices like the iPhone and Android smartphones of all sorts was initiated by Japan's Nikkei and perpetuated by the masses. Today Nintendo has provided a statement that suggests Nikkei's report was based on bits and pieces strung together to create a news strand that, in the end, simply isn't truthful.

It’s time, Nintendo: Kill Wii U and think big

It’s time, Nintendo: Kill Wii U and think big

I know I've said this before, but it's official now: the time has come for Nintendo, at long last, to kill the Wii U and move into other areas in which it might be able to actually grow its business.

Nintendo earlier this week announced that it's been forced to slash its Wii U sales expectations by millions of units, saying that it felt the heat from a wide range of players in the market, including Sony and Microsoft. The company also didn't seem to believe that the world wouldn't care about the Wii U. Oh, how wrong Nintendo was.

Super Smash Bros. Wii U to do away with edge-hoggers

Super Smash Bros. Wii U to do away with edge-hoggers

For those of you that've been playing every single Super Smash Bros. game since the first hit the N64, you may very well know about the type of player that hogs the edge. This is the sort of play where a player gets kicked off the side of a level and - barring the player that hangs on the edge to block them - would otherwise be able to flip back up. The next generation of Super Smash Bros. takes care of this nonsensical bit of gameplay.

This morning the creator of the Nintendo multiplayer franchise Super Smash Bros., Masahiro Sakurai, has posted a single screenshot of a next-generation game. This game will almost certainly exist inside the Super Smash Bros. universe, and due to the fact that the Super Smash Bros. games for Wii U and Nintendo 3DS are coming in 2014, rumors are flying wildly. Sakurai suggests only that this pic does not show “a story mode like The Subspace Emissary.”

Nintendo finally considering “smart device” gaming as Wii U flops

Nintendo has confirmed it is "studying" the potential for smartphones and gaming, with company president Satoru Iwata admitting that it is "thinking about a new business structure" in the face of appalling Wii U sales. The Japanese gaming firm was forced to predict whole-year losses of $335 million - having previously guesstimated a $950m profit - after it said demand for the touchscreen console dropped by around 70-percent compared to earlier estimates. However, Iwata argued, it's not just a matter of porting classic Nintendo titles to iOS and Android.
