At the E3 Gaming Expo later this year, Nintendo fans are going to get what they’ve been waiting about a year to know: the Wii U’s launch date and price. Even better, they’ll be able to see a host of games slated to come to the device to see if they’ll be worth playing.
But perhaps Nintendo shouldn’t give that gift to consumers this year, and instead, should give itself the gift of discontinuing the Wii U.
Epic Games vice president Mark Rein says that gamers should expect an amazing showing from Nintendo's new console at this year's Electronic Entertainment Expo. If that doesn't happen, he says, he's "be shocked." Rein's endorsement pulls a lot of weight as Nintendo continues to struggle with the lack of third-party support on its platforms.

Nintendo’s Wii U will have NFC functionality and digital download support, president Iwata Satoru has confirmed, promising a better splash for the next-gen console having “learned a bitter lesson from the launch of the Nintendo 3DS.” Speaking to investors and analysts after revealing dire financial results for the last quarter, Satoru revealed that NFC short-range wireless had been added to the Wii U’s specs, supporting payments, reading tags embedded into “cards and figurines”, and more. Meanwhile there’ll also be a new Nintendo Network account service, allowing multiple users to have their own separate profile on the Wii U.
Nintendo's fortunes go from bad to worse, with poor sales of the 3DS and Wii between October and December contributing to a 61-percent drop year-on-year of profits, and the Wii U not expected until the very tail-end of 2012. Nintendo announced 40.9 billion yen profit for the three month period, going on to predict full-year losses more than three times greater than previously expected. In fact, Nintendo reckons it may be facing a 65 billion yen ($838m) loss in all, considerably higher than its earlier 20bn yen estimates.

I’m often asked when Sony will launch its next PlayStation. Just about everyone is interested in finding out if the next console the consumer electronics giant offers up can be as appealing and popular as its predecessors. The push for Sony to launch a new PlayStation is also born out of the fact that Nintendo is launching a new console this year, called the Wii U. And if history is to be our guide for the future, most console makers launch their new devices around the same time.

Some say it could happen next year, while others think it could be 2014. There are even some folks who say Sony won’t release its new console until 2015.
If you can believe the rumors that are floating around right now, E3 2012 might be the biggest show ever. The rumors are pegging launch details of the Wii U to turn up at the show, and scuttlebutt says that the new Xbox and PS4 will be teased at the show as well. If the rumors come true it will be the first time all three new major consoles have been officially talked about during one event.
